hey guys. hope this is in the right section.

Yesterday my 96 r33 gts-t started playin up. the car has done almost 90,000km's (not even 5,000 with my ownership). only mods are an apexi pod, and the hi boost solenoid trick

anywayz. as of yesterday. the started started playing up under acceleration. once it reachs about 5k rpm im feeling a slight hesitation in power. and the cars making a quiet clickingish sort of noise. the only time its doing this is under full boost in medium/high revs. (in all gears)

has anyone experienced a similar thing? i really dont know how to explain it any better as im a bit new to performance engines. (haha ex car waz a lancer).

does this sound like maybe an engine prob, turbo prob or hopefully sumthing simple???

any help/advice would be great.

cheers in advance. Luke

Is there a popping-type noise along with the hesitation? Sounds like another victim of the R33 coil-pack breakdown.

Cold-start it one night with the bonnet up, and look VERY closely along the sides of the coil-packs in pitch-black (with the coil-cover off) - If you see blue arcing to the carrier-bracket, then you need the dodgey silicon/araldite fix, or new coil pack(s)

This is just a best-guess :)

Yeah i was thinking the same thing.

Also check you have the right sparkplugs as well. You never know what you have in there.

could be a fair few things.......turbo maybe giving up, doubtful its coilpacks.........could be airflow meter?

your hi-boost solenoid trick might be causing the engine to ping, how much boost is it running??

lots of questions to answer to help determine the problem

There's no ECU mods listed, so I can't see how it'd be pinging - stock ECU only ever goes rich/retard with bigger boost. I'm waiting for a better description of the sound it makes when it hesitates.

Peace out bruddas ! :)

-Nathan. (p.s. I'm Nathan, You can't be Nathan too. think of another name!)

hard to decribe the sound, my first thought waz a light flapping sound???, then its sorta a clicking sound. i really dunno how id describe it, as far as ecu mods, nothing. doesn't even have an aftermarket exhuast at this stage, just pod and solenoid. so boost would be roughly 7psi

either way, it never used to do it at all. then it suddenly started yesty morning, and has done it EVERY time the revs get up there since.. so its not really an intermittent thing. and yeh. the drop in power does feel slightly like a slight miss.

Do it with the window down, listen hard for the engine note changing - if it's spark breakdown You'll hear a pop/paff type noise, as it hesitates. With boost that low, it'd have to be a pretty badly cracked coil case to leak spark, or some seriously dirty, wide-gapped plugs. They're likely still at the factory-spec 1mm gap.

A note about re-gapping plugs: Narrower gaps mean less torque & power - especially low-down. You wanna run 'em as wide as possible to keep a big, clean, happy flame burning inside those cylinders. Of course, too wide and it's pop-pop-pop, blown out spark when the mix gets thick. :)

This has just started happening to my car too. '93 model 33 with 3' turbo back and the dual stage boost removed.

I changed my plugs to NGK coppers heat:5 gap 1.1 about 2 months ago and i had a good look at the coils when i had them out and they all looked ok.

But last week it started stuttering/missing at about 5k rpm. Runs fine once you get to 5500 - 6000. I might have to look at the coils again and maybe ungimmick the boost controller and see if that has any effect. I cant see why it would though. :P

ok. new development to my problem. the way i have the hi boost on the solenoid is via a 3 way switch allowing either hi boost, low boost or 2 stage. decided to flick the switch from hi mode back to being off (low mode). had no problem at all. for a couple of short trips. later in day swapped bak to hi mode. after a couple of accells. the problem started reoccuring. so when i get a chance i guess ill have to check my connections there. and maybe just deal with a couple less psi till i have time to get the car checked by sumone who knows more then me.

i dunno about that but use spark plugs listed on this forum ..ngks gapped down to .8 = 23.00

( dun think its fuel pump or flter but replace the filter?? Perhaps 10.00 )

cant be air flow metre or u'll blow out black arse smoke...

i think ur running high boost on shit plugs that are probz 1.1m

get ngks

when ur running it on high.. how much psi would it be boosting up to ? any more then 7 i'd still say its ur plugs...

gtst25 tom... ur probz is definately lol plugs...

bcpr7es or 6es?? one of dem shud be rite

:sorcerer: if it fixes ur problem feel free to thank me by doing burnouts infront of any local police station

i dont know if this would help, but my car at high rpm was making a rattle noise every gear. found that the fuel i put in the car was 95octain (due to being out bush). anything less then that 98octain the engine doesnt like it.
