New P-plate Laws!

Just saw this on VicRoads website.

This should stop all the pointless rumors floating around

From 1 July 2007, new laws will be introduced for holders of a probationary licence, restricting them from driving a high powered vehicle.

A driver who obtains their probationary licence from 1 July 2007 will not be able to drive a vehicle that has:

* eight or more cylinders;

* a turbocharged or supercharged engine (except diesel powered);

* an engine that has been modified to increase the vehicles performance; or

* is a nominated high performance six cylinder car.

The current power to weight restrictions will continue to apply for any probationary driver who has obtained their licence before July 2007.

I obtained my probationary licence before 1 July 2007

If you obtained your P plates on or before 30 June 2007, a high powered vehicle is considered to be any vehicle with a power to weight ratio over 125 kw per tonne, or with an engine capacity to weight ratio over 3.5 litres per tonne. This includes any make of car.

Penalties

From 1 July 2007 the penalty for driving a high powered vehicle will be three demerit points and a maximum fine of approximately $1100. These penalties will apply to both the current power to weight restrictions and the new high powered vehicles restrictions.

before it was just a small fine and no demerit points i think. Vicroads probably saw that the previous fine didnt stop people so put in demerit points...

i dont think a cop would pull you over to do a power/weight check for a ute lol

Its a work car and he would most likely understand and not bother.

I think they will only check if some kid was behind the wheel of a 4wd etc

3.5L per tonne was always a requirement, but as long as your hilux weighs more than 1143kg (which I would have thought it would) you're safe

Exactly. Laws are getting tough, but they wouldn't of had any impact on me when i was on my P's, i never drove a car like that. I can understand it will be hard for P platers to accept, but it probably is a good idea in the long run.

Hard to accept?? What about the inconvenience, buying, selling blah blah thats the worst part about it. I would imagine most drivers of high powered vehicles would use them daily as well.....

As for the drink driving and speeding penalties toughenin up i think that is the way to go, it good that theyre cracking down on the people who are actually doing something wrong....

Well if you're breaking a law then surprise surprise you're doing something wrong as well....You might not agree with the law, but its still the law....and its still up to you if you want to risk it...the larger fine and demerit points will make you have a serious think about if its still a risk you want to take

this is also fairly important and nobody seems to know about it and it already applies..

From 1 January 2007, all drivers under the age of 26 are required to carry their drivers licence with them when driving or penalties will apply.

you could ask vicroads (preferably via email/letter so you get an official response not some pleb on the phone) if theres any possibly of an exclusion during business hours because its for work purposes. Worth a shot really.

That law was always there, it was just poorly enforced with no real punishment.

So really, you cant say its hard to accept at all, its always been that way. :sorcerer:

FYI femno I'm not some oldie thats saying you shouldn't do this or that period....I broke the law for a year, and got away with it....$1100 is a lot different to $100 though....not so sure I would've risked it

kaz - hasn't that been a law for everyone like for ever? I thought it was like a $50 on the spot fine for not having your license on you when driving???

I don't see what everyone is complaining about the laws haven't actually changed if you already have your p's...and if you are on the new system the only cars i can think of off the top of my head that you wouldn't be able to drive would be the little turbo lasers and exa's and stuff, and a commodore has more power than them anyway so meh.....on;y real difference is a bigger fine if you get caught.

Anyway there are always ways around it, you can get 200rwkw out of an externally stock v6 n/a commodore engine so meh

i wounder if you can drive a R34 non turbo , once your off your Ps then do a engine swap , there some mad looking R34s on car sales that is going for $19500 purple for memory , this way i wont proberly crash the car early like the GTR crash last week which hed just buy the car and was on Ps , get the car that i want then change the running gear once off my Ps
