Custom's guys aren't particularly dumb these days. If they suspect something is dodgy like a brand new twin plate clutch for 10,000 yen they're well within their rights to open the parcel, examine the contents and find out what the real value is.

It only takes a google search most of the time to find a retail price for most of the items people ship and that's exactly what they do.

If the parcel is declared incorrectly then there are penalties....

Whenever I buy big heavy things I always put the correct value down. So I pay the tax big deal i'd rather pay a little tax then be in trouble with customs....

Not to mention it is an even $1000.. you've better off declaring like $954.99 or something obscure like that  I too also don't dodge customs tax as I import the odd firearms part here and there and just don't need the extra scrutiny :)

I must admit it was a bit of quick research and a snap decision to declare $blargh. I didn't even work out the actual extra costs involved just assumed a lot. The fact that I was asked the question in the first place is a little strange to me in fact...

I was thinking about declaring an odd digit number but ended up with $blargh.

Now I'm a little more scared knowing the package left on Saturday :P
