V500s would be heaps expensive, I am sure a 2nd hand PFC wont cost you that much!

I have seen a few on the forums for about $1,200 I think, way cheaper than a RB20 one..

If you want plug and play, and something that looks standard go with a LINK.

LINK is plug and play, and they just send you the ECU board, no casing. What you do is pull out the standard R33 ECU board and put the LINK board into your standard R33 ECU casing so it look standard!

No one will know your running after market stand alone ECU, unless the piggy that pulls you over notices you have no AFM! Which I don't think there smart enough to do..

No AFM because link runs MAP :D

LINK is about $1200 I think!? direct from LINK website.. cbf checking, but go there and have a look. Thats brand new and delivered, and plug and play.

Cheaper than WOLF, MICROTECH and a 2nd hand PFC

My 2.5c :)

Thanks,

Abu

wow, just had a look at this. very impressed! i have to sell my V4 wolf 3D, so i had a look at the V5, it seems like an insane ECU... but i cant afford 1900... this LINK ecu though really seems like value for buck!

I have seen second hand Pfc's sell for $1500 and new ones at the same price (if you can find one). For $400 extra i would much prefer a NEW V500 with all the added features, listed previously.

The V500 is so small that you could probably pull it out of it's casing and fit it into a std 33 ecu case. Alternatively (and something i plan to do), I will get a chopped 33 loom from a scrapped car, dummy the ecu and chopped loom in the std position and power it up, then move the std loom and V500 and hide it in the dash.

A club member had a Link in his 33 gtst, and even after AVO tunned it several times, he wasn't happy and pulled it out. Not sure how old the Link ecu was, so there may have been huge upgrades between his ecu and the ones currently on the market.

EDIT: Just had a look at the "Link" links provided. He must of had an older ecu, as these look pretty reasonable.

haha no wonder vic calls you a geek! :P do it for me aswell and ill buy you a slab.. !

Just means you have to plug in a computer with the software to change all the settings instead of doing it with the hand controller.

Having used a Wolf 3d in my previous car i wouldn't hesitate to put one of the new ones in my skyline and i'll seriously consider it when the time comes to upgrade the ecu. :(

what am i limited to without the v500 hand controller?

No handcontroller just means you have no real time readings, and cant tune via handcontroller. You will have to plug the unit into a laptop via cable and have it tuned that way.

That will require you to have the software to tune via laptop.

Nothing major, you could always just get one later on if one comes up, its not required.

im guessing i cant use the security pin function without hand controller? darn coz i relli like that feature? Any1 know if its a definate a new hand controller will come out? And wen? Where do i source one? atm discussing with psi parts but always gud to shop around.

cheers

All tuning has to be done via laptop. AEM have purposely removed tuning capabilities from the h/c, so that w/shop customers wouldn't "accidentally" play around with fuel, ignition, start-up, etc. Certain "non crucial" things are still adjusted via hand controller: boost, turbo timer, AUX's, etc.

What do you miss out on with the PFC compared with the Wolf 500?

:D

I would definately pick the V500 over the Pfc.

- as stated by mad082

PLUS

- PIN security

- Multiple AUX inputs and outputs (Control boost, thermo fan, NOS, water spray, Meth inj, C2O, warning lights, afr sensor, etc)

- turbo timer

- boost control via rpm and load

- map sensor

- and a whole lot of other shit i don't even know.

With the Pfc you are just limited to whatever the std ecu controlled, and the option for the added boost controller, which i have read/heard is a prick to make run properly.

A new hand controller is DEFINITELY coming out, but time frame is unknown; by me anyway :D

I know that this is a top priority for AEM and the search is world wide. They have found a few new h/c, that are compatible with the ecu firmware. You need to understand, alot of time and money was taken into writing firmware for the ecu to work with the original h/c, so they need to find a replacement with the same logic/chipset. The ones they have found are good but have their own set-backs/limitations: some are too bulky, too small, no graphic display, limited interface, etc. Unfortunately it may take a little more time to find something close or better and get the manufacturer to complete minor changes, so that it works 100% with the ecu and all it's features.

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
