Hey all. I was looking in my DICK SMITH catalogue the other day and I saw these radio frequency card readers with programable cards. I had a thought that i could perhaps install one of these in my car behind the dash crash pad and wire it into the ignition system.

The idea would then be to hold the access card near the dash to enable the ignition to work then start the car like normal. I would of course set it up with a latching circuit so that you dont have to hold the card there all the time.

I think this might be a good idea for just that extra bit of security. For example if someone does break into your car and trash the steering collumn to get to the wiring at the key, it will not work anyway. ie wire it in somewhere harder to access.

No one would even know that this exsisted in the car.

Well it is just an idea. Do you think this could work?

Some of the new saabs have a similar thing too, but with a chunky keylike thing. I think my old mirage had some sort of chip in the key that allowed the car to be started (i.e. if you got a key cut without ordering a blank form mitsubishi, it would unlock the car but wouldn't start it).

Sounds like a cool idea to have a card thing though. How much does it cost?

Seen these units at dick smith or jaycar for like $80 or something. I think that you might have to get the card programmer but is fairly cheap security device. I might buy one to have a play around i think. if i don't use it on the car I am sure that i will find anoother use somewhere else.

there are alarms already that will only allow the car to activate if you have a piece of hardware in range... think its called shark card or some shit... but i really dont remember...

keep it on your person, then if you get car jacked, the car shuts down 200m away

little over the top though...

Theres a PPI which is a chip which acitivate or deactives an imobiliser when the chip is out of a 1 meter range, its installed in the steering coloumn and the chip goes on your key ring.. looks like a key kinda..

www.securityinmotion.com.au sells it .. although i was advised against it and a key pad would be a better alternative

so pretty much a kill switch does the same thing? if its armed to the fuel pump car wont go anywhere.. or the coils engine wont fire etc..

just abit more expensive :(

Pfft but wheres the wank factor :P

LOL na prob what your saying is the go. I might just use something like that any ways.

Good idea though :), we use those cards at work for access to restricted rooms etc

sounds cool, but the problem is that a lot of cars these days are stolen via flatbed or tow truck. Spend the extra $ on an alarm with SMS notification and tilt sensor.

having that killswitch substitute WILL stop the average teen hood who wants to steal a car to get home, but will not stop someone who wants to steal YOUR car.

I have a weird uncle who actually had sn O-ting dynabolted into his garage floor, then at night he'd literally chain the car to it through the tow hook.

Although this is the same guy that stood in amazement at his dishwasher... in 2005. He's an odd one. Though in Salisbury in Adelaide, it probably saved his car more than once. How many car theives bring bolt cutters big enough to cut 3 cm thick anchor chain?

Go the dynabolt.

tilt sensor is useless too .. how much vibration do you think is caused then someone hauls away your ride?? if its in gear the wheels screetch and the car alarm goes off..

chain to something is a good idea.. until they decide to remove your rim..

true. on the premise that it is getting towed. that doesn't stop me from pulling the 18" chromies off it. that is the real reason for it. so in practice it does serve a purpose.

going on this card idea, just to be different you could wire up the card reader to trigger the car to acc and or on, and then have a start button so you could bypass the key completly, remote keyless entry and a card start up, all you would need is your wallet no need for keys, would take a bit of tricky wirering to set up but would be pretty cool wank factor i rekon,

Hey good idea. yeah i was thinking of doing something like that too as i thought the factory ignition barrel was prob not the best security around. Hmm just thought of another idea just now. Do you think that going to the trouble of taking the steering collumn apart and spray paint all the wiring black just to make it harder to determine the colours, would be a good idea.

I could spray it with some nice sticky body deadner or some crap thats hard to scrape off. That might a good deterant if someone breaks in and trys to find the right colours. will take them longer to scrape off the sh!t to see the colour.

Hmm prob going to far i guess.

a swipe card reader would be pretty trick,

although if you have a bluetooth phone, maybe you could set it up for something like this?

I remembered on the news a couple of nights ago here in NZ, some guy has the patent to opening and closing doors using bluetooth signals, seems like a good idea to me
