ok ppl heres my problem!!!

the car got defected in early jan! it has been sitting around whilst work has been done on fitting turbo, cat and service! i got the car home last week and it was blowing a small amount of smoke (grey/blue)on idle and driving. this would get worse with abit of acceleration! i thought oh yeh its coz its been sitting around for a while... i have been turning it on and driving it around the block on an average of 20mins per day and the smoke today has been a little worse! when accelerating to boost (7psi) it dumps smoke! blackish with some grey... thats wat i saw form the rev mirror. i do believe that the oil was abit too high when the mechanic started doin the work..

so would this be due to it burning the oil that was too high?

the turbo stuffed?

running too rich/lean?

or just burning too much oil all together?

also whats the go with regency and exhaust smoke? and can i get a fine?

if anyone has some suggestions? as i havent got much of a clue! would be great....

thanks ppl much appreciated..

Hmmmm, I've way over filled my Rb20 with oil (full 5 litres) and no problems at all (so far). Turbo seal could be gone or piston rings are fried. My bro had same thing with bluish smoke and it was piston rings. If so, start looking for a new engine. Do a comp test.

i agree with ^^^

firstly, get a compression test (gives you an good indication of whats the go) and from there decide what you want to do...engine rebuild, forged pistons etc...

goodluck mate!

I'd disagree with getting an engine rebuild, my brother has just gone through one on his Rb25, 6k and 1 year later to get car on the road. Just get a new engine, thats why R32 are best, cos of cheap parts. Remember, there is a lot to getting a forged engine, ie: metal head gaskets, balancing etc.

However, if you do decide to rebuild, go RB24 with GTR pistons and crank. They're usually pretty cheap and will produce heaps more torque and wont have to worry about regency issues if you went Rb25 instead.

Id agree with the RB24.

but i made a thread about this and have had personal issues with doing it.

I woul not go RB24 unless it was professionialy built and done properly. Huddy on here has one and he has just got it going strong now. And he has had it for a while now.

Find a 2nd hand engine. Make sure you understand that it's 2nd Hand. SO things will need to be replaced.

Good luck with it.

If u want to do the RB24 engine i have a bare block with head out the abck u can take away for free. I have no use with it. SPun big end bearing but these will need to be replaced for full forged engine anyway.

Good luck with it mate.

Far out man your bro got ripped then.....and what dont you think building a rb24 wont be expensive as f**k.

sinista: I said that he shouldn't rebuild, but if he choses to, its not worth it unless you go for RB24. Yes, it will be expensive but probably worth it

Its not as simple as just getting forged pistons. My guess, you'd be up for 3k minimum to get a rebuild, and thats probably a stock rebuild. You'll need all new gaskets, tensioners, pistions and rings and may need extra work if the cylinders are scratched. You also might as well get new bottom end bearings, water pump etc. etc. If your engine is gone, find a clean second hand one unless your willing to bite the bullet and pay some big bucks

ok i guess ill need to get a compression test! this will show where the problems r???? oh and whats the deal with regency and exhaust smoke?

its just wierd that one day it was 100% fine then its blowing smoke!

like before my old turbo decide to go and smoke up the whole street it was blowing 0 smoke but now i have new one its blowing.. could the blow of the other turbo have something to do with it?

cheers for all ur help guys! its just been a long road since defect and its still goin!

the advantage if it comes down too it aswell, if you rebuild you know the history of the engine. thats a hurdle we came across with my missus rex, to buy another engine or rebuild, it worked out cheaper for us to rebuild it.

heres a rough guide;

pistons 1100 delivered,

head gasket-440 (trust item i dont trust cometic there shit)

timing belt- 100

bearings- 140 (acl race items)

gasket kit- 300

idler and pulley tensioner - 100

machining-200

water pump- 40

and labour all depends on if you take the motor out or how well you know your mechainc, mine cost me 500 cash but thats cause im good mates with them

lol...u guys make me laugh a bit.

Start simple and have the turbo looked at first. It might just be an oil seal. If its not then get the compression check done.

An engine refresh should only cost around $1800 odd + bits (oil, filters, etc) but dont start thinking down this road till u do the simple things first.

Every time someone posts smoke from the motor theres 50 posts -"Oh noes, go for the forged 500rwkw rebuilds"

Skylines (and other cars in general) dont like sitting for a while either

    • There's no current law that stipulates that you cannot eat dessert with a soup spoon, although, it is socially unacceptable of course, shame on you But, there are emissions laws, which is sort of on topic to the OP's questions Things like emissions are, if anything, going to get stricter in the future for road registered cars I believe, 'Merica has yearly emisions testing in some states, the UK has it's yearly MOT testing as well which includes emissions Building, and purchasing modified vehicles may become alot more problematic if you want to keep them registered, how, if, and when each state handles this is anyone's guess  More food for thought really
    • I'm on the AD09, strictly on the street. They are a very nice tyre, have done ~16k km and are near the end, might make it to 20. They are, in my opinion, very much just a street tyre. I wouldn't expect them to be equivalent to some of the others in your list on the track. Although I'd be pleasantly willing to be surprised. My memory of the AD08Rs is vague enough, due to the passage of time, that I shouldn't try to compare them, but I feel as if the AD09 is not quite as "sporty" as the AD08R was.
    • There's a difference between "selling" a product to someone (which, if you walked into a workshop or bricks and mortar store and bought and walked out with it, is just the act of buying and selling) and rolling your buggy into a workshop and having them fit non-roadworthy stuff to the car. And for the latter, let's ignore any potential legal loophole arguments that the armchair lawyer might want to make to differentiate between supplying your own parts to be fit by the workshop or getting the shop to supply and fit. The workshops that have been dealt with in the US for this are in the latter category. It would be near impossible to try to charge/attack/criminalise a shop for selling "for off road use only" parts to someone unless those things were intrinsically illegal in their own right, or had other legislation wrapped around them, such as there is for guns, pharmaceuticals, etc. Well, no. And you knew your argument was silly when you made it. And there is. it might be somewhat harder in Vic, but then that's the price you pay for electing the long list of (unts that you have to run the whole shit hole**. But otherwise, you can put an aftermarket or otherwise tunable ECU into a car and get it run through the whole shebang of emissions testing as part of an engineering cert and, so long as the tune is "locked" afterwards, then that modification is on the list that is approved on the cert. But....it is an expensive process. ** Of course, the (unts who make up a large proportion of the population that eternally try to get around the rules are also a part of the problem and the reason that you end up with draconian rules in the first place. By contrast, SA was founded and the government and civil service set up and run by very sensible types (largely German) who set up good structures that enabled a lighter touch of government on the somewhat better behaved population. it is only more recently that we have followed the rest of Australia down the criminal drainhole of penal colony behaviour and now we have to catch up with mobile phone cameras and so on.
    • Not specifically the revamp Toyos. In the past I've used Nitto NT01s, which were essentially the same compound as R888 with a different pattern (that's what the internetz said, so just be facts). I did like the NT01, progressive fade, didn't go from grip to 0 grip in a split second. If you look at the serious street/track guys, most are either on Cup 2, A052, A050, AD09, CR-S or AR-1.
