hey guys

i'm just wondering about how much stable boost can a rb20det turbo produce (stock turbo, cooler + zorst mods)

i see some ppl run 13-14psi, but i also see that some people have a lot of trouble of holding onto this boost all the way to redline, with many different people saying different factors are the reason for inability to hold steady boost

does the stock rb20det turbo max out around the 12-14psi region?

cheers

I would not recommend running more than 14psi with the standard turbo anyway unless you want to go fishing for an exhaust wheel in your exhaust...12-14psi is fine and it will not be very efficient past 14psi anyway...depending on the health of the turbo and engine...you might get between 150-170rwkw...you should have no problems holding boost stable at that level...

i understand that ppl dont reccomend more than 12-14psi

through my searching it seems that a majority of people cannot hold stable boost at 14psi with the stock turbo. it has been mentioned that the turbo just cannot provide that much boost up top, even with a jammed shut wastegate

just wondering if people have had experience running stable boost, as in, 14psi all the way to redline, on stock rb20det stock turbo (minor mods, zorst + fmic / intake etc).

I had full zorst 3" split dump pipes, hi flow cat, turbotech controller (tried another as well) and a few other mods, was running 12 psi, and it would run 12 all the way to redline in 1st but 2nd and up it dropped off by redline to around 7 or 8 psi. The standard turbo's just don't flow enough

My mates 32 was running 16psi on the stock turbo for over a year :P

Told him to turn it down but he never did ! Took it off two weeks ago and threw my stocker 33 one on his car...... couldn't believe it when the stock turbo came off and not a thing was wrong with it! No shaft play etc......... must be a freaky one off cause every other person I know running 14psi on a 32 constantly has ended up sending the wheel into the cat eventually...

btw he made 178rwkw @ 16psi couple of months back - mods were full exhaust, FMIC, CAI & boost controller (not sure what brand - manual 2 stage bleed valve) - held boost flat until over 6,000 to 6,500 when it dropped off a little

My 32 ran 14psi on the stock turbo for the last few years and when it was pulled off recently for a turbo upgrade it was in excellent condition, extremely minimal shaft play. One of my customers at work has run his stock turbo on 18psi for the whole 6 years he has owned the car and its still going strong, makes 185kw.

Some have issues with the stock turbo dropping boost others don't.

It comes down to the exhaust.. If the dump pipe is not quite right or the cat is restrictive it will drop boost.

If its dropping boost, fit a closed loop ebc and it will hold boost.

On a tuned ecu with ~1bar (providing its holding 1bar), good exhaust, fmic expect 170-175rwkw.

Upping the boost over ~12psi doesn't do a great deal for the top end (I picked up 12rwkw going from 12.5psi to 1bar on the stock ecu) even if it is holding boost but it really does improve the mid range a hell of a lot.

I ran 1bar for ~4years. Turbo came off and was still in good nick.
