Hi guys something has let go in my gtr.Sounds like it was a very loud tapping noise comming from the head,Thought it may have broken a cam took the covers off everything looks ok.What can i do to tell if it's the bottom end.

it be a bearing most likely little end bearing fail, Associated with "Death Knock" you can drive it it just means your time will be very short lived and damage will be worse if you do. have fun

Ok, a few questions.

What is 'death knock' and 'death rattle' - like when specifically would they occur and sounds etc? Mainly looking for ways to pin point if its occuring etc.

What is the beast way to determine an engine's health? I would assume just a comp test and a leak down test? Do they suffice? Or should there be other things to look at/do?

compression and leakdown test is fine for determining an engines health. You will know if you have got a problem mate you cant miss an engine that has done a bearing.
