Hey lads.. Im really thinking hard about getting a new Turbo for my R34 GT-T, their seems to be so many to choose.

But i dont know what would suit an R34 the best.

I dont plan to run stupid amounts of Boost, id like to go a maximum of 1bar tops and maybe short bursts of 1.1bar.

Ive been trying to find HPI mags with articles on R34 GT-T's, but to no avail.

I dont want to get anything thats huge either, as to reduce Turbo lagg. So what would you guys recommend I look at?

cheers.

have a flick through Rb25 Turbo Upgrade, All Dyno Results might give u a better idea different results people are getting with different turbos.

i run a garret t3076r which is a lowmount with internal wastegate.

i find it to be pretty responsive however other bits n pieces will need upgrading to make the most of it. (am aiming at 1.4 bar)

if you only plan to run 1bar however you may get away without some of that.

i'd have a chat to some workshops and get their opinions then do some research based from their recomendations.

ultimately the more honest you are with what u want from it in the first place the less dissapointed you will be in the long run.

good luck with it.

Yeah, search around, I'm sure there was someone asking this exact question about 1 week ago, almost identical title.

Anyway, check the Dyno thread like already suggested and remember R33 turbo upgrades = R34 turbo upgrades.

Same same.....

Cheap options are 2nd hand following :

HKS2530 : make 1 bar fine - Robo's has a thread showing around 230rwkws and loved it (at the tme)

HKS2535 : Probably more suited to RB25 as better top end, only slightly more lag.

GCG highflow, i would say close to HKS2535, not sure which is better but so close it prolly doesn't matter.

Cheap new :

Slide highflow, heaps of peeps have em.

Pricey new:

HKS GT-RS - i won't one !! but $2300-400(?) for new but that's the whole kit delivered from Japan.

great for 240-290 rwkws i believe and super quick spoonin'

GCG highflow new, around $1750 exchange i think in the group buy section?

Good luck.

Go get yourself a Hi mount manifold with external wastegate fitment, 250~,

get an external wastegate ~300-600 depending on what you buy,

get a Garrett GT3076R from slides or soemwhere cheap, ~1800 or so,

get a computer after that, with bigger injectors and a bigger AFM,

then be happy with ur brand new car pretty much.

If you want stealth mode,

get a GT30R hybrid with IW, 1,800-2000 or so,

keep you stock low mount manifold,

get a cheap but good manual boost controller,

set it to 9-10psi and keep it there until you find money for other stuff.

No offence Pauly, but seriously, was that your 1st turbo upgrade?

I just did my own HKS direct fit job which would have been marginally harder than a GCG highflow direct swap out and man, what a headache. But only cause i couldn't source 1 particular $6 part! Held me off for over a week ! Haha. And mainly cause Pirtek didn't know thier own parts! Had a pic of it too and they still didn't know what it was. Thing it, it was a pic of a pirtek part ! Sheeet...

Although the next time around it will be heaps easier as it won't be so 'new' to me.

Yes it was.

I blew my turbo after an exhaust install which I accuse of foul play, then I decided... hmm... get a stock one, or do what I was gonna do in 6 months anyway. So I bought a GT30R turbo and havent looked back, now I need new injectors, afm and ECU, and most probably splitfires.

Theres nothing unnessesary about that for my target power of 250kw.

BTW, I just paid 700 dollars for a metal cat with 700CFM of flow and a customised dump pipe with a screamer attachment, and I wasnt gettin my money back, so I had ATS make me a kit that utilized the GT3076R compressor wheel in the RB25 housing (after being max hiflowed), and its been excelent so far.

The GT30's are great turbos and are, I think, a great replacement for those looking to see ~ the 260kw mark after they have finished engine modifications

Freegan hell! Good work dude .

Sounds like you know what you are doing

...i don't, haha but I'm getting there.

Aiming for 250 aswell but that will be the limit of the hks2535, I think the GT30's can push way more can't they? As in 300rwkws?

yes gt3040 can push well over 300.....thats my pick. But you have to know what sort of power goal you have in mind. Like are you after 230, 250, 280, 300, 350 etc there are also other mods such as cams etc etc, what mods do you have atm. its not always about how much boost you want to run its more how much power you want to make, and with your driving style whether you want ultra response or dont mind a touch of lag for that awesome rush of the bigger turbo. Also what sort of budget are you on, you have to think new turbo means in most cases new inj, new afm and in most cases a new dump pipe and a tune.

    • If doing that ^, I'd take the idle up valve out and plug the hole in the pump.
    • You can try capping the power steering idle up valve at both ends if it's old. The valve and the intake manifold. That is something that is known to fail in Toyotas with age and it will suck power steering fluid into the intake and burn it in the engine which can cause issues. Then bleed it again with engine off first. Do like 30+ lock to lock turns with the front wheels off the ground.
    • Hi Brent, I am wondering if you ever worked this out? I have upgraded this unit to a newer one and everything works bar the reverse camera, so i really want to know what plugs are what so I can patch the camera through. many thanks in advance Mike

    • Update:   smoke test all pipes no issues cleaned reservoir   fluid put in ( dexron 3 atf)   steering turn side to side and could hearing  gurgling from steering rack which I assumed was air lock, opened one of the steering rack connections and could see loads of air getting pushed out( not sure if you meant to do that / whether it will re introduce air into system)   anyways, loads of side to side sound was gone. Turned car on, pump was slightly ( barely) wining so turned side to side few more turns and fluid level when car on was almost none in resorvoir which I guess is normal if car is one. Turned car of and fluid was gushing out. Almost 200-300cc was pushed out. Repeated engine off side to side followed  by engine on and same result       going mad now. It seems system is either sucking air in whilst on or there is tons of air which I am not giving it enough time to bleed. Thoughts?   would it work like brake caliper if I open steering rack copper pipes and let gravity pull all air out?   or maybe have a restriction somewhere? What is the red circled item, could that be blocked? It i
