Hmmm, there is nothing magic about a M3, twoWD will lose every time to fourWD, everything else being roughly equal. I'm calling, ummmm, 'misinformation', maybe for commercial reasons, not unusual :D

I disagree. Within reason you can always make a stupid argument that one is better then the other. Looking at BTCC isa the best example of awd vs fwd vs rwd. The Audi 80 did real well for itself as it looked after its tyres and was only 80kg or something heavier.

But personally, i think an awd car can handle big power and go about doing a job one way. Whilst a lighter car with good weight distribution can also do a similar job with less power and better dynamics. But over a 50 lap race, you woudl be backing the awd vehicles to be quicker as they in theory would be able to look after their tyres better. Though with the higher power output and weight they woudl most likely have to pit more often anyway....so, who knows who cares :D It interesting to see different cars going quick

Having good drive out of a corner is great (as with a AWD car) but it is not the be all and end all. If a rear wheel drive car (with good weight distribution) has a higher corner speed than an AWD car that is considerably nose heavier it is more that capable of producing similar lap times, especially with less weight.

Regardless of the previous comment, feel free to PM me if you would like any further details.......maybe this might help clear up any "misinformation". It seems to me that you are not very familiar with any of the SM motorsport vehicles :P

I'm more than happy to share with you any information you may need.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind answering:

1. What model M3, E30, E36, E46?

2. Are these road registered cars? Or track/race cars only?

3. What do they weigh?

4. Do they have full roll cages, with stripped interiors?

5. What tyres do they run? Semi's or full slicks? Size?

6. What size wheels do they run?

7. Power? 240rwkws?

8. Brakes?

9. Am I asking too many questions?

And lastly which track days do these cars come out? Any links to times on Natsoft??

Cheers and thanx in advance!!!!!

E36 M3, 1210kg, no longer rego, stripped & cage, slicks (240f, 270r on 18"), 240rwkw(fairly stock engine except for a set of cams + SM Motorsport tune), 13 1/5" front rotors, Brembo all 'round..............any more questions???? ha ha :D:/

Car should be running at the next Beemer club day in about 3 weeks.

Im interested to hear this as well. I have no problem believing the thing is quick...but 1:29 is off the chart.

Curious to know how they get Carrera Cup type speeds out of a car with less power, and possible semis rather then slicks ? Carrera Cup are something lime 1280kgs from memory so i suppose the thing could be 150kgs lighter?

LOL, or there could have been a timing error :/

Well that explains it!!!!

Cheers for the info and well done to Sam on the times!!!

I think you'll find that the current Carrera Cup cars are doing v8 supercar times, so at least 5-6 secs faster than the Beemer...

In the Victorian State series there are a number of old Carrera Cup cars and GT3s running around. They do between 1:26 and 1:29s.

The Carrera Cup cars in the main game are V8 Supercar quick, but the Vic state series ones i was referring to are slower for any number of reasons. Team/Engineering support with setup. Fresh tyres for all races, driving standards and of course the spec and lifing of components :/

Damn. Looks like i need to work on the pace of the little GTSt :/

Awesome!!

What's the fastest street car you have doing trackdays? Specs and times of that?

Any idea of which cams its running. A friend has a neat little daily driver/club car that he races with BMW Car Club in NSW and his 3.2L E36 M3 is only making 170rwkws with a chip and exhaust. He woudl be worlds quicker with that sort of power.

Basically its all about $, I'll back a same cost GTR against a M3 anytime. Jeez, I've owned stock M3's with an old Datto Z car, but spend enough on the Beemer and, shit, where did that thing go to.

"Oh yes this car is stock except for a few minor mods" how many times have we heard that, usually from Eurotrash owners who have dumped $ on their badge hero to actually get it to perform, but still want to stay cool :D

Feel free to do some research on the person doing the developments and the driving before making what are very uneducated comments.

And just to clear it up.........the engine is in the M3 is rebuilt to standard (big dollar engine is on its way) except for some cams, I did say "fairly stock engine" not fairly stock car. Pretty simple to understand if you had of read it properly. Any further info...feel free to have a chat to Sam at any of the track or test days he will be attending over the year....and they are quite a few.

As for the M3 vs GTR battle, I think you have forgotten that Sam owns a GTR and as i mentioned earlier, keep your eyes open for the times when it next hit the track, it will be quite a bit quicker than the Bee Em. I'm sure you are happy to hear that.

By the way look up how many GTRs (or any track day cars) are running around Winton in sub31's before making such stupid little comments.

I for one love GTR's but that does'nt stop me appreciating other cars or other peoples achievments. I think if you havn't already worked it out, a 29 around Winton is quite an achievement and if you ever manage to do that yourself let me be the first to congatulate you. If you cannot (or even get close to that time) perhaps you should keep your comments to yourself. :D

One last point......this thread is about "fastest track" going GTR's, not all about $ (as you mention above) spent on cars. If I had of know this would have gone off topic so far, I wouldn't have mentioned the Beemer, which has probably cost less than some of the fastest GTR's I know of.

Re $? LOL, ifi i add up the spend on my little R32 GTSt and it would be about 30k plus the purchase price.

To date i have only done a 1:38.1, but have only done about 10 laps of the place. Silly Dutton format, and that 38.1 was being held up by a 430 Ferrari. So over the 9 years of GTSt ownership i have spent what i see as stupid money to get a car that is capable of 36s at Winton.

And let me be the first to say, if i was as smart as i am fat that i would have a far quicker car. Its not about the money spent on the car or the sum of the parts. But the nouse of the guys swinging spanners and developing the car. So hats off to Sam as the cars he works on seem to be at the pointy end of what the cars shoudl be capable of. Not many workshops can make that claim with many cars fallign well short of what you woudl expect their performance to be.

LOL, doesnt Sams brother have a VL track car? Or used to? Any ideas of the sort of time sit used to/does?

  • 3 weeks later...
Another update on the SM Motorsport M3.....now has done 1.27.30 around Winton!!!!!! This was on new tyres and measured with a Performance Box.

GTR times coming soon...................

Fark me, that's flying. Was that at a practice day or a track day?

What's a performance box??
