in car of Rod Markland's GMS HR31 winning race # 3 at Wakefield a month or so ago. Wait til the last part of the last lap for the best part :P

some great driving from Rod's son Craig.

cheers, Mark

Had to use a bit of real estate to get by on the inside. Looked like he was sizing things up for the previous lap or 2, probs with getting power down out of the corner but plenty of legs up the straights before braking wiped out the ground gained and do it all over again :) The old Falcon Group C grunter certainly had punch out of the corners.

Two things impressed me from the in-car. The engine sound was really good, and the closeness of the gearing. Notice the engine rpm did not drop much at all on the up-shifts?

To be honest though, the R31 or any of the turbo cars from that era didn't sound great from the outside. Leave that to the M3 BMW; no muffling effect from a turbo, and running up to 9000rpm they were brilliant sounding.

Maaaaate!

You've gotta hear the HR31's from the outside!

Just as awesome. They've got a real scream to them.

On that particular weekend the track marshals voted the '31' the best sounding car out there.

Also on that weekend were V8 Supercars, utes, and some other stuff.

I did hear them - in their heyday when they ran at Lakeside in the Group A era. I was also a Nissan fan then, regardless of whether they copped a pounding from the Sierras (and they did - clearly outpaced as a rule). Sorry, those turboed Group A touring cars just didn't have "it" for exhaust note. BUT - the in car with engine noise sounded magnificent. :P

I'm just happy to see them brought out for a run now as a historic class.

Might be a BIT biase here but......The JPS M3 of David Towe although sounding great does not sound neally as good as either Terry's or Rod's R31.....But that is my opinion and everybody is entitled to there own opinion...I tell you what though(and I am not selling the event)....come our to Oran park at the beginning of June and all the cars will be out there racing....I think you might find that you change your mind....Make sure you put new batteries in you hearing aid's though....only kidding...LOL

God the sound of that thing..... :P *drools*

Is the box in that still some sort of H pattern?

I tell ya though, after seeing that and the inside of todays V8 race cars it makes the V8 look like a family car!

I can't imagine having to drive that for 1000kms at full race pace....

That's the great thing about the category - you're seeing and hearing a variety of machinery. And I reckon it's a good thing if different aspects of the different makes are what gets us going as spectators. The R31 as I said was something I followed as a fan during that era. Same as the Group C Bluebirds, DR30 and the R32. It was a bit of an interest kicked off by Howard Marsden's professional approach to running a team. Way ahead of his time, and the machines were different too.

Two things count against me here though - Oran Park is a bit far to travel, and those bloody hearing aids keep buzzing when I turn them up... :laughing-smiley-014: Seriously, I hate it when there is some good motorsport that's just too far away.

    • More photos are up, and the price has been dropped to $16,000. It's just had a service and a new 12V battery, too.
    • I agree on doing some better than factory pistons, rods, and oil pump. For anyone using the vehicle on the road, I don't get why everyone wants big cams. The stock cam profile, with some more lift would be mint for road usage. Everyone going big cams and then wondering why it isn't as responsive in traffic, when they've shifted the torque curve upwards an additional 1000RPM. Make torque, at lower RPM. Sure it's not as cool as claiming "500KW" and revving it to 8,0000RPM, but that same torque 2,000RPM earlier... Then you don't need the extremely high end pistons and rods, and blah blah blah.
    • Personal experience. Those f**kers burn. And are actually a PITA to put out. Next time I walk down the back, I'll snap a photo of what the inside of the bonnet looks like when that thing ignites. PS, powder fire extinguishers are useless on that stuff too as it's fibrous and when it ignites, it starts to pull apart. And you end up just blowing powder through a sieve effectively.   Like the big thing is, if it's fire resistant, it's job is to stop what burning? The METAL above it? It's just to try keep heat off the bonnet paint work.
    • Oh man, sorry, $60.00000000... 😛
    • That's more or less what he meant. What it really means is that you do not have to go full crazy on the build. Don't need the best oil pump, expensive rods & pistons, big cams, etc. You can upgrade whatever you want instead of using stock level items, but you don't have to. Having said that - any time an RB is opened up, if anything is getting replaced, I think the opportunity should be taken to do all the sensible upgrades. Pistons, rods, pump, etc.
