I was just wondering - what actually generally gets done when a car gets serviced, for your average 10 000km service?

At what points do you need more work done?

Is there anybody who's taught themselves how to service their car (ie somebody who didn't previously know too much about cars mechanically) to save a bit of money

best way to learn is to get someone to show you.

normal service is oil, oil filter, and air filter.

the machanic will tel you after he has done the service if anything else needs to be done.

yeh if you have a decent k&n filter etc no need for a air filter change, just oil, oil filter and i also change my spark plugs aswell, i do mine every 5000kms.

U change your spark plugs every 5000`s ?????? what for do u get problems with fouling they should last heap longer then that

Normal Copper plugs are meant to be changed every 20 thousands k's but for best performance there meant to be changed roughly every 7500k's thats why alot of people change copper plugs soo often

There was a whole topic about this somewhere on here

Mechanics will do more than just an oil+spark plug change - they look over the car for anything which is perished, loose, worn, broken, etc. They use their experience and qualifications (which i dont have), which is why i like to run my line past a mechanic every now and again to let them inspect it for something i cant see
