i have a small alumimium radiator type thing i was going to use but not sure if its quite big enough.

The measurements are 250mm long 50mm wide and 50mm high, would that be enough.

PS unit has been pressure tested to 90psi is a hydrolic oil cooler in another life.

I have a bosch 044 mounted externally (in the boot, near the battery, R33), it feeds off a 2ltr surge tank that is feed by the std in-tank fuel pump.

I am just trying to grasp what you call normal and noisy. From day one my pump has consistanly been loud, where i can hear it even with a loud exhaust. Now my exhaust does not give me a headache or drown too badly, while crusing at 100, but is acceptably loud.

Also, how can you tell if your afr are leaning out? You mentioned surging, etc; is that like a slight hunt on idle, as mine intermitantly does this, but it usually gets worse when the headlights are on.

Well my pump played up tonight... I've suspected the pump for the last 6 months as its only been the last 6months I've been having the occasional surge feel off boost & light throttle. I've swapped out afms, ecu's, tps, ignitors everything. It recently came good after giving the ic pipe clamps a re-torque (coincidence).

Primed the car, fuel pump made its usual noise but its speed was fast slow fast slow. Cranked the car and it wouldn't kick. Gave it another crank and it spluttered in to life, drove down the road and it just died, no fuel pump noise. Sat for a second, cranked and drove and it appeared fine again.

I'm up for a new pump.

To4gtr, do the stock gtr pumps flow enough for 300rwkw maybe a touch more with 40psi base fuel pressure?

LOL in my limited experience all things electrical, i know that motors just dont heal themselves all that well, they either work or they dont ( not sure about the pump side of this but motor i reckon i know ) if the smoke gets out of the anything electrical they dont work very well after that.

If you dont mind me saying it sounds like you have loose conection some where for it to work and then stop and then work again, no fuse blown or such foul happenings ?

and if anyone can invent a way of putting the smoke back into any electrical equipment you will make a fortune.

FIXED!!!

I asked a mate of mine who had a 1j cresida and he played around with tranny coolers a while ago and had one sittin there which i scored for $20... Got 2.5 meters of fuel hose and mounted it up front.

The pump was allways warmish before and when it was making lots of noise it was very warm.. now after 1 hour and 30 minutes of driving the pump was COLD. cold..... interesting and it makes no loud noises at all anymore and the afr's are stable as hell.

I pulled up at the twin servo's on the freeway after 45 mins of doing 120ks an hour and it was very cold tonight and i felt the pump - cold. felt the fuel cooler and it was not as cold as the fuel pump was but it was not warm either... So i am guessing it is doing the job but it might need to be bigger.....

Weird thing is that i felt the fuel rail on the engine and it was cooler then fuel cooler at the front of the car.. I think i will leave it how it is for now and see how it goes in traffic on my normal working week this week...

So yeah im stoaked.. no more afr issues and a happy "cool" 044 pump not whinging at all! Cant complain for a $35 mod....

Here are some pics.. ignore the cable ties i will be fixing that up shortly :( ran outta time! i mounted one side properly i just gotta extend the bracket a little bit.

I tried to up the boost to 25psi and the coilpacks were dien on me so i taped up the new ones that i had purchased a few weeks ago and installed them and now every time it hits 25psi it was blowing the intercooler piping off EVERY time.. came off 4 times.. so i need to pull them all out and get them welded so they dont come out anymore! one thing after another!!

hehehehhehee yeah man i still cant believe that i got it on my fuel line :( its just really overkill if you ask me.. but it works so my pump is happy... pump is happy i am happy... hehee

cheers mate - remember put it on the return line so you put it after the regulator as it goes back to the tank.

I've had 2 fuel pumps in the past go in a similiar fashion.

One in a VN commodore and another in a VL. Both began working again once given a little time to cool.

I should mention the second VN pump (aftermarket cheapo) simply just died; unlike the first oem pump that worked then showed signs of leanout then worked again once it cooled, it wasn't long until it just stopped working.

Also had a fuel pump die in a 318is BMW. That simply went from good to nothing. Dead.

Hahhahahahahaa!!!! maybe you can run a little cooler to keep the smoke temp's down so there is less chances of the smoke getting out...

yeah well i been thinking about that one.. i might have to re-locate it somewhere else later on...

Good stuff - well sorted - however - just make sure you don't have a front end crash, break the cooler, fuel everywhere, flash and goodbye car and perhaps driver.

I'm going to state the obvious here & suggest you take very serious notice to the advice John from UAS gave in regards to where to mount the cooler. Do you think he went to the effort of placing it in a protected (relatively anyway) space & ran the ducting etc just for the fun of it????

BTW, nice work with the fix. Just move the cooler before it BBQ's you or someone else :(

    • I had absolutely no symptoms whatsoever that anything was wrong.... I'm very happy it was all spotto'd and re-bled and re-torqued and aligned though. Will be picking it up tomorrow and undoubtedly be like "Oh, that clunk is gone" "Oh, the car really wants to drive straight" "Oh, that pedal feels better" "Oh, it feels like I've gained 25hp" "Oh, the handbrake works now" It should have been a sign that the new Project Mu shoes had 3mm of pad depth on them out of the box, and the OEM ones from 25 years ago that we took out also had 3mm of pad depth, implying the issue was not, and never was the shoes, but we put that down to it not being adjusted correctly. It wasn't, but it wasn't even adjustable at all given one side was boned and the T Junction of the cables was on a 45 degree angle, the non-working side being the one on the massive angle. Obviously when I had adjusted it and reset it and re-tensioned it I had either got it stuck or something along those lines. Oh well. Live and learn and absolutely could have been catastrophically worse so I'm rationalizing it as a win, kinda. I also got the chance to measure the distance between rear rim and the suspension arm/shocks and found a 30mm rubber block only just doesn't fit there. Which is great to know before ordering wheels, when I assumed 30mm was easy. The man with the Porsche adapters has rims that use 23.9mm of that space, so it's safe to assume I have between 23.9 and 29.9mm of space there to play with on the inside. The wheels looked pretty stupidly pokey with the 20mm spacers on the rear, only for me to find that the studs come out another 12mm and the wheel doesn't actually sit flush with the hub because you're supposed to cut your original studs. The wheels do have cutouts that kinda accomodate it, but not fully. So my 20mm spacer was anywhere between 25mm and 35mm. ~25mm and send it will determine on where the wheels sit with the spacers on. When I put the pads in for the track day I will mess around with spacers (with wheels that do not clear studs properly when mounted to spacers) and do more math, for the last time, for the 7th time.
    • Lucky pick up Best to find these things before something horrible happened to the yoke flange thingies I would hate to think what would happen if it dropped the tailshaft  Hopefully the holes are not flogged out in the yokes and it was just the bolts that got munted  As for the hand brake.....ouch, look like the disc got rather hot, and I assume smokey, I recall when I had a front caliper seize on the Commodore, there was lots of smoke and the disc was glowing cherry red when I was able to eventually stop and have a look, and stopping a big heavy car, going down a big hill with some rather high RPM down shifts and some hand brake action is something that makes you think hard about life
    • One of the things that never seemed right was the handbrake. Put in some nice new Project Mu shoes. We figured the rears were out, so why not. We're right there. My handbrake never worked well anyway. Well, this is them, 15km later. 67fdcf94-9763-4522-97a4-8f04b2ad0826.mp4 Keen eyes would note the difference in this picture too:   And this picture: Also, this was my Tailshaft bolts: 4ad3c7dd-51d0-4577-8e72-ba8bc82f6e87.mp4 It turns out my suspicions that one side of the handbrake cable was stretched all along were pretty accurate, as was my intuition that I didn't want to drop the tailshaft to swap them on jack stands and wasn't entirely sure about bolt torque. I have since bought the handbrake cables which have gone in. I'm very glad that I went to my mechanic friend who owns an alignment machine to get an alignment before the track day, because his eyes spotted these various levels of "WHAT THE f**k IS GOING ON HERE?". Turns out the alignment wasn't that bad, considering we changed the adjustable castor arms out for un-adjustable castor arms, and messed with the heights. Car drove pretty good with one side of the handbrake stuck on, unbleedable rear brakes, alignment screwy, and the tailshaft about to go flying and generally being a death trap waiting to happen! (I did have covid) (I maintain I adjusted the handbrake correctly, but movement caused shennanigans and/or I dislodged the spring on the problem side somewhat, or god knows what). G R E G G E D
    • Very interesting, im not sure how all those complications fit in to running a haltech instead of a stock ecu but I'm starting to think I'm a bit out of my league.
    • I just put 2 and 2 together. This is a Neo converted R32. The Neo ECU (in concert with the R34's AC controller) runs the AC quite differently to how the R32 ECU and AC controller do it. If you just drop it all in, it won't work. There is some tricky wiring required, including changing to the pressure switch that the Neo controllers want to see. I don't know what it is, because mine was done by a guru. It was a year or so after I did that transplant before he worked out what needed to be done.
