Has anyone out the with an R34 high flowed their factory turbo?

I am weighing up my options between high flowing my factory turbo for $1600 or buying a larger ball bearing turbo for $2500 - $3500

I know with the larger turbo's comes alot more lag, but does high flowing the factory turbo give a much greater increase in power?

I really don't know a great deal about turbo's, any info would be great

Is it safe to raise the boost after high flowing the factory turbo?

I have booked the car in next week to fit a Hybrid FMIC and install an APEXI AVCR boost controller, my mechanic advised not to run more that 13-14 psi.

What do you think a safe psi level is on the mods i am about to get?

You could raise it, but just abit. You'll end up hitting the stock ECU's saftey mechanism (rich and retard) when it detects too much airflow via the AFM. So you'll be maxing out your injectors and afm as well.

You're mechanic is wise, run no more then 12psi for constant acceleration. Any higher and the stock ceramic turbine wheel will fly out into your exhaust, 13-14psi may be okay for quick burst only.

If you're after a turbo for good power and decent responsiveness then hiflow is the way to go. Anywhere from 230-260rwkw and full boost from anywhere between 3000-4000rpm depending on the turbo/setup/etc. The HKS bolt on option are good as well, have a look into them. Theres a few for sale atm. HKS GT2530, GT2535, HKS GT-RS etc.

Oh forgot to mention that you should at least have these parts to fully take advantage of your new turbo

- stand alone ecu/computer

- turbo back exhaust with a good cat

- boost controller, electronic one better (AVC-R is good)

- fmic (good since your getting one)

- decent fuel pump, like a bosch

- injectors, nismo make 480cc, sard make 650cc and up

- afm, either a Q45 or Z32 one

And perhaps:

- Tomei poncams

- Splitfire coil packs

Don't forget to upgrade your brakes and suspension as well. No point having all that power and to not be able to use it properly.

One more question, as the FMCI and Boost Controller is being fitted next week, what would you suggest to be the best bolt on mod?

Next mod I'd do for your car would be fuel pump and to look for a Power FC. You'll definately need a PFC (or some other form of aftermarket management) if you want to fully utilise your new turbo.

I've already got a HKS GT-RS on the way, but I won't be putting that on to much later. I figured I'd like to get all supsension and braking mods done and then fully utilise the standard turbo first before bolting up a bigger turbo. Your car would be a nice street weapon even with the stock turbo if you get decent suspension (shocks/springs/coilovers, swaybars front and rear, front caster kit, front and rear caster kit, pineapples/subframe cradle bushes) and some nice brake pads as the stock 310mm rotors and calipers of the GTT are fairly good from factory.

Whoops I forgot to mention what I've got done to my car atm.

- 3" SS split dump

- 3" SS hiflow cat

- 3.5" trust cat back

- apexi pod

- K&J tube and fin fmic with 2.5" piping

- greddy profec b 2

- bosch 040 pump

- power fc

Goes really well and once I get the PFC tuned for those mods it should be even better and should keep me satisfied for a few months before having to bolt on my new turbo. I just think its a waste if you go straight to changing the turbo when you haven't fully explored the limits of your standard one, who knows thats just me though. :thanks:

Nice mods, must go hard, have been trying to find a new Power F.C out there but with no luck? Any idea where i can source a new one?

Also, what mod do you feel made the biggest difference?

The Power FC will be ur next best mod and its sumthing u'll need for a hi-flow, can be hard to find these days but guess wot, just saw one for sale by Slide in the Traders section, be quick.....

I'm running a R34 High-Flow from Sliding Performance...

We managed to pull 250rwkw from 1 bar (automatic transmission) so that was quite an effort. For under $1000 delivered for the turbo; you can't really go wrong, especially if you're after a sensible / streetable level of power.

Other supporting mods apply:

Full Exhaust

Fuel Pump

Injectors

Cams (optional)

FPR

Air Filter

Head Gasket

ECU

blah blah blah...

As Andi has said though; suspension and braking is a key component that has to be looked at... without them you won't be able to effectively / safely use the power to be gained.

If you want to get a highflow, and don't want to have your car off the road while you send it to gcg/precision to highflow, i've got an rb25 turbo that i'm lending aroudn to sau members to use so they dont' have their car off the road while the turbo's being highflowed.

I'm in sydney too. if you want, my number's 0403 211 482.

highflows are very good. good response and have potential to put out lots of power proviiding you've got all the supporting mods..

    • Structured text and other high level PLC programing languages are not allowable in Functional Safety. They are very difficult to audit. My PLC stuff is almost exclusively oriented towards Burner Management Systems which are a particularly pernicious form of Safety Instrumented System, when implemented in an SPLC. Even the part of the code written to work in the non-safety logic part of the PLC, like with a Siemens S7-1500 series, still needs to be treated as if it was safety code, with access restrictions, code fingreprints and the like. And Allen Bradley can go EABODs. They ae full of shit. They have this whole lie going on where they say if you use a ControlLogix controller and its IO, and then just duplicate the IOs (ie, run in series or parallel depending on type, to try to make it "fail safe") and "use these programming styles and place these restrictions on what you do" that you can achieve SIL2. What a load of crap. They just get away with it because no-one in the US seems to understand the first thing about Functional Safety and carries on as if all they have to do is buy only SIL2 rated equipment and hey presto, it's a SIL2 system. Idiots. /rant
    • If you're really considering leaving it, a great question to ask is, is the magnet going to stick to the sump? The answer to the above is the same answer towards if I'd have any level of comfort leaving it... Personally, based on the cost of a motor if the magnet were to cause damage, I'd be fishing it out either way. Use the methods in here. It fit in through the plug hole, it'll come out.   PS, get a small actuatable claw for a bore scope. OR if you know a vet, they have really cool controllable scopes with hooks on the end. Supposedly they're like playing a video game. Ask if they can acquire you one of their scopes... Engine oil after all is just a different type of lube right? Will only make it easier on the next dog or cat...
    • All other (Boolean) logic functions though, are just built on those blocks above. Which does give you a lot of functionality in logic. It is basing that on using thresholds with analogue signals like GTS alluded to.   Not having things like timers will make it less useful for some of the ramp up logic you'd want, and again, on Haltecs capacity specifically, I'm not across anymore what you can / can't do with different tables.   I'm assuming, with your logic you want to implement, not only do you want your timing safeties, you're wanting to be able to derive the duty cycle for your solenoid, to maintain I'm assuming 175PSi? Or are you using a standalone WMI controller to maintain the DC correct, and you just want the Haltech working out which fuelling maps you should be on?
    • It doesn't seem to follow revs. Oddly it seems to follow TPS a little bit from what I can see, but with some delay a bit. IE end of the graph, when he lets off throttle fully, pressure drops a lot, then slowly builds back up, but rpm is on a nice cruisey drop off. I do agree though, it seems very electrically.
