hehe, ben, wasn't saying you were being cheap matey :( just thought that maybe since you were doing it at night you didn't have enough.

Mine was installed when the tank was full. I didn't have to even put my hands in the fuel. Spent a bit over 1 hour to install it, no noise, no nothing. good flow. perfect.

I wouldn't stress too much about the orientation of the sock mate. My car, and others that I have installed, as well as many others that are running gtr pumps on the forums are alright.

This orientation fits the best with that bottom plate still in place. I'm not sure if this affects it, but my pump still has the bototm plate in place, and it is sitting on the gtst rubber ontop of this plate. i'm sure that would help hold the pump steady more. Maybe the orientation that I have it clears the tank.

It seems like you're spending a fair amount of time doing this. If you want, I can put you through to an honest workshop near our area that do an absolutely great job.

I know - northern beaches performance? Thats the place you were mentioning before?

Wouldnt you have trouble when you get low on fuel as the orientation ensures you pick up from the very bottom. That why you can run the tank very low before you have any fuel pickup issues.

Haven't spent too much time. Main wait was the tank seal. Just driving the car now with a noisy pump :D

I'd rather play around with it myself then I know what is done.

Hopefully the pump is ok and I can quieten it down.

Cheers..

How did you go with the pump, were you able to quieten it down?

I have a 32GTR pump in my 33 (there when bought it) and mine is also very noisy. I had no luck repositioning it in the tank, and still makes a lot of noise.

Can someone tell me, what would happen should the pump fail? Will the engine just stall, or is it possible to do more damage, ie. if on boost at the time, will it destroy the bottom end?

Well I just tested the pump for a couple of seconds without fuel. It sounds really quiet out of the car. (At first I had the hose connected and metal pipe connected - it was noisy then).

So I think it must be the way it is sitting in there.

My new pump GTR has about a 2mm thick rubber sleeve aroud it so I think Iwill leave that on and see if I can position it better. Anyone else got tips on which way to bend the bracket etc. Very fiddly job.

It is really tight in there. There seems hardly enough room to have any gap the whole way round the pump and the relief valve piece at the top. It seems inevitable that it will touch the tank. I'm thinking this might be the reason so many people complain of noisy pumps. WOnder if the sedan fuel tank is different

I see somebody mentioned they bent the cradle to the right to allow it to clear - was that when looking from above?

I did this and added a bit of rubber to test. It is a lot quieter but every now and then it makes some wierd noises. Maybe it doesn't touch all the time but every now and then part of the pump rests on the tank.

Will I dont think its moving but it does get a little louder when the car is warmed up and in traffic.

Anyone know if they bend the bracket to the right?

Also, how loud is yours? Mine is like a buzzing - it doesnt get noisier when I rev it though (compared to idle).

Maybe I'm being fussy though.

Should it be almost silent?

    • Very nice - I also have a 92 GTST and hardly see any others around these days

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
