August 1991 was when there was a model revision from memory... most of the post revision (Series 2) R32's came with side intrusion bars... although, they're not exactly the best intrusion bars ever.

I might be wrong, but it sounds like someone is either trying to take you for a ride or they are simply talking shit. Did they offer to "find" you a pair of compatible doors by any chance??

I understand the rules have changed, but under the old 15yr deal all you had to do was have a set of bars fitted to the existing doors & you were good to go. Unless you're locked-in, I'd consider speaking with another shop, even if it's just for another opinion.

15year rule all you had to do was weld the bars in. You're getting that complied under SEVS i take it? If so then that is why you have to get the factory side intrusion bars, seems a bit stupid but hey. Their logic is that some of them came with the bars from factory so all that come through you must have them. :)

under SEVS the only R32's to have been tested were Series 2 models (why would you test an older model anyways) so they all had factory side intrusion barsd. which means if you import a Series 1 R32, then you need to "upgrade" it to Series 2 specs. What worries me is that the pathetic excuse for side intrusion bars in the S2 R32's actually passed ADRs...

that said your compliance would cost a lot more if the workshop had to test a custom made side intrusion bar for an S1 door, putting S2 doors on is the cheaper option.

A couple of doors is hardly something to fuss about. I see full doors including trim go for a couple hundred bucks for the pair.

I bet your copmliance is costing you shitall compared to what compliance used to cost. When I got my r33 imported, the price all around was 5k for RAWS copmliance. Every single place in all states were charging that.

for 5k, I could afford to buy a little spare parts division worht of doors.

ok. heres the problem. if your doing it under the 15 year rule. it wont work cos its not 15 years old.

and if its before 06/92 you cant either. under raws sheme.

unless you doctor the de-reg papers and the seatbelts and the brakehoses. also the vin number. for the "fast" screenshot that you need for an import aproval.

if its already here and being complied then yes. and god knows how they got it thru. we had to "export or destroy" our r32 test car cos it was a 6/92 not a 7/92 doh

15 yrs imports dont need the adr tested doors. cos they were not aussie deliverd. nor do they need a new cat etc etc.

its just bars/child restraints and mirror glass and a filler neck restricter. then engineers/bluslip etc etc.

I imported an R32 that didn't have side intrusion bars.

From what I understand, the problem is that the aftermarket side intrusion bars are not certified, or require an engineering certificate of some sort. However, they are identical to the series 2 intrusion bars.

What was done for me was to put the series 2 doors on for the engineers compliance, then revert back to original doors, now installed with the side bars.

It's really no different to taking out performance parts for compliance and putting them back in again later.

its 4/91 you can import 89 to June 91 or July 92 onwards

how hard is it to check the vin on fast to check the build date!

I would have thought you would know this if your a compliance shop remind me not to go through you ever

so my 91 doesnt have factory bars and I have to find some 92 onwards doors to fit up that make it clearer for you

I have a S2 R32.

Whats actually wrong with their side intrusion bars? Mine look absolutely massive, much larger and thicker than what was in my old VS commodore. :S

They occupy 1/2 of the door with only a small area at the top and bottom that is not covered; the intrusion bars look like a big arsed commerical roof support beam.

Mine was imported back in late 98 with 67,000km's on the clock. Interior really did look like a bran spanking new car. Its now cracked 238,000km's.

and if im not mistaken the sevs scheeme is no longer on isnt it. isnt that what raws is. the replacement??

dave, sevs and raws are both operating. RAWS (registered automotive workshop scheme) is what you need to go through to become a raw. a raw can then comply cars under SEVS (specialist, enthusiast vehicle scheme). so the two scheme's go hand in hand. lol, scheme is the right word...

    • One other question, is there a chance that changing the idle speed can lead you down a rabbit hole and is the reason the tuner didn't touch it? Reason I ask is because if that's the reason the tuner avoided it then I probably shouldn't be touching it lol.
    • Pfft. As if I'd ever point a high pressure washer at my car.
    • The nature of my commute has changed. Way back then it was traffic lights all the way, for ~28km. It sucked. When they finally stitched the expressway together I could do a good 15+km of it at a steady 80-100 with no stopping. That alone has gotten me down to flat 10s. Prior to that it was mid-high 10s. I can't remember the delta that I saw when I got the idle down. It was only ~150 rpm, because the idle speed was never terrible, but for the delta in consumption to be noticeable it would have had to have been at least 0.2-0.3 L/100km - which is not to be sneezed at when it comes for absolute free. It's only about 50L per year, but that's ~$100. A few extra pizzas is always welcome. Note that I have a record of every tank of fuel that has ever gone through my car except for a handful put in by someone else, like my mechanic. I can show you the difference between stock RB20 and tuned RB20, stock RB5Neo and tuned, winter and summer fuel blends, winter and summer fuel blends when the ambient temperature is not appropriate for the blend, working O2 sensor, blown O2 sensor, boosting f**k out of it and frightened to boost it because it is pinging, and so on. OK, I probably can't do all that now with 100% clarity - but at the time when any of those things were in event, you could see it in the records. There's 25+ years of simple tank after tank records, so you have to look for landmarks to work out approximately how old any single record is. What's really important is the meta data and that lives in my head.
    • If you're claiming the issues are not skyline specific, then either the USA is living in the 90s / early 2000s, OR you have the issue of "survivor bias". Which is you're mainly hearing and listening to those with terrible experiences, and haven't found the guys who have cars with good decent builds and no problems. It happens in AU too, that plenty of people keep having issues, and they keep going to the workshops that are known to be shit "because I read on the internet". Even worse, are those who keep posting on the internet as though they know for a fact what something is, when they've never touched/looked at said item in their life, and again are making assumptions, based on something they read, or because it's a certain way in other cars. It's even funnier when those same people debate the facts with the people who've lived and breathed this stuff for over 15 years. Example, I've had someone tell me you can't do something with a Skyline, because they read it on the internet, except I can tell they're wrong, as I did that exact thing back in 2008 with my Skyline.
    • The funniest part I saw, was someone would bitch and moan on FB about something, Andy would be the one to respond, asking for more info, if he could contact them, what the engine setup is, what their config file was, and 95% of the responses were people just going "der! It doesn't work" and Andy going "What doesn't work?" And then going "The firmware!" And they'd go around in circles as no one could ever give information, and Haltech couldn't fault things on the bench, (especially when people wouldn't give any specifics).   Many moons ago, when Andy was back at e420c stage, he reached out to me, and asked me to test different plug and play looms for him (already had an e420c in the car on his V1 PNP loom). And he kept asking me, as I was competent enough to be able to give him some specific feedback on what was/wasn't working, how to replicate the faults etc, and work through things with him. Most people are terrible at answering the questions they're asked, or being able to provide quality feedback other than "it doesn't work".
