I think all JDM imported cars are tuned to run on 100 RON fuel as that is the lowest RON rating fuel they have over in Japan. Correct me if i'm wrong...

In saying that, I've never tried Shell's 100 RON fuel due to it containing Ethanol. They use Ethanol just to bump up the RON rating. Unless your car has been designed to handle even just 5% Ethanol, you are killing your fuel lines and engine.

Research in to it a little more you will find 5% is perfectly fine.

Below is a quote from Sydneykids very extensive testing on the Shell 100ROM ethanol mix. I hope that this will silence the critics for the last time in regards to any supposed corrosive element within this fuel.

February 2006

We have a new project car, an R33GTST that is in need of some TLC. One of the recent upgrades was a Power FC. As most people are aware, the default ignition maps are a little advanced for Optimax, Ultimate or Vortex 98. Not as bad as they used to be for 95 ron fuels, but still a tad. Obviously I will tune it properly eventually , but we have a few mods to go yet and I don’t have the time to tune it multiple times. So the idea was to stick the Power FC in and run it on the default maps for a couple of weeks. On Optimax and Ultimate (didn’t try Vortex) it was reaching knock of 60+ up our usual test hill in 4th gear as logged on the datalogit. The dash warning was also flashing frequently, as it is set for 60, in normal day to day driving around. When the tank was just about empty this week, we filled it up with Optimax Extreme (@ 5 cents a litre more than Optimax). Several runs up the hill and we are not seeing knock over 10. And zero dash warnings in 3 days of normal driving.

Now that is very worthwhile, there is not enough Optimix Extreme around yet for me to tune it exclusively for 100 ron, but it sure will be a useful for the odd track day or run down the ¼.

I will monitor the effects of the ethanol on the fuel lines, o’rings and seals over the next few weeks. The injectors and fuel pump will have to come out shortly so I will check their condition as well. I am not anticipating any problems, but it is still worth checking.

March 2006

After a month (~2,000k's) of running exclusively on Extreme in the R33GTST, I did a fuel filter change on the weekend. Cut it open and no sign of any foreign material, deteriorated fuel hose etc. That means zero effect from the 5% ethanol, as expected. So we will continue to use it.

Current status, after 8 months of running exclusively Shell Optimax Extreme 100 ron.

After 3 fuel filter changes I still haven’t found one sign of fuel system rubber or metal deterioration.

I cleaned the injectors last week and there is not one sign of any effect on them either. I also flow tested them and they performed exactly as they did last time I flow tested them.

Based on the results with the R33GTST, I have now started to use it in the Stagea, which I will be tuning again very shortly to take advantage of the extra performance on offer.

Below should answer all the mongs out there who say it wont corrode your fuel lines BUT IT WILL destroy ur engine internals...

Sk. have you managed to open up the block on your R33 GTST? Would be very interested in seeing if there is any discoluration/corrosion etc in the block after running extreme exclusively.
Actually, the cylinder heads is off at the moment, it is getting some new exhaust valves after a 10,300 rpm over rev (wasn't me). Looks beautiful, no signs of detonation, inlet ports are clean and unmarked, pistons and exhaust ports have the right amount of discolouration for a 110,000 k's old engine. The valve seats (inlet and exhaust) were in perfect condition. The Bores are perfect, no lip, still can see some hone marks. The rings look to be doing their job just fine and the standard head gasket was sealing perfectly.

Overall, it's in perfect condition, especially considering we have been running it at 15 to 1 A/F ratios off boost and 12 to 1 on boost. Plus it’s done a few laps on circuits, a handful of 1/4 runs and is tuned with lots of ignition advance. Twelve new Ferrea exhaust valves, o’rings, a quick port and polish of the combustion chambers and it will be ready for some more work.

For anyone else who is not convinced by the above please use the search menu (maybe a good idea to filter by Sydneykid) to see the extensive testing that has gone on to prove that Shell 100RON V Power Racing/Optimax Extreme is an awesome fuel for skylines. The standard ecu loves it...the only thing to watch out for is for cars that have already been tuned for another fuel via a pfc etc etc may need to get a retune or a checkup on the dyno.

that is a complete urban myth. the lowest quality fuel in japan is not 100RON, and not all japanese cars are tuned for 100RON.

I have done some work for a EFI manufactor in the past and they did tests using ethanol. Its not to good. It is corrosive!

They had stuffed injectors and all sorts. I got told to stay a way from it.

It is made using sugar, which if enough gets in your fuel tank can destroy a motor. One of the old revenge tricks was adding sugar to someones tank.

petrol is made using old trees. putting bark through your motor will ruin your bores.

sugar is converted to ethanol, after which the fact that it came from sugar is irrelevant. besides, mythbusters tested the sugar in the gas tank idea and busted the sphincter out of it. as for ethanol being corrosive it depends in what concentration and what your car's fuel system parts are made out of. In Brazil they run E85 (85% ethanol) and their cars run fine. A manufacturer just doesn't stick their neck out and say "my car will be fine" unless they have to, which is what is happening here. Sydneykid has been running 100 RON fuel for 12 months and has not had any issues.
