could you really hear it ping or was it just in the power FC....????

Hey mate,

Yeah my tuner could hear it knocking when it was on the dyno.. i don't know what knocking really sounds like i couldn't hear anything besides the exhaust. But i was in the car during the dyno run and my tuner had his head in the engine bay.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Will take it to another tuner when time and money permits ( at the moment its on a safe tune so no pinging so it's not like i need to rush).

A few people suggested block cat. I took it off and had a look and the honeycomb is still intact, but i guess that doesn't necessarily means it's flowing right. My mate suggested punching the cat out, and see if it stops pinging. Hmm but then if it doesn't fix the problem i will need a new cat anyway. hahaha

Carbon canister hey.. will have to check that out too.. thanks for the ideas.

hey man. interesting thread. can u post a link to ur dyno sheets when its pinging?

whats your fuel setup like? fuel pressure? are u using fpr?

as for the airfilter - get rid of the cheap filter and go for the Apexi Power flow.. best thing ever. also its a dry type so no hassles with oil and AFM.

EDIT - the stock bov is only good for like 15-17psi on the stock turbo.. however if that was leaking then id only imagine the mixture to run a bit more rich.

Ummm isn't he already using an Apexi (pod), Whats an Apexi Power Flow? i thought it was the same thing.

A good tuner on a good dyno should be able to sort this issue out quite easily. Shouldn't take 3 pages to sort !!!

it wont pull timing as water temp goes up, once water temp is 80deg or higher correction is 1.0 (so no correction)

The power FC CAN pull timing out as the water temp rises. With the datalogit you can change the water temp threshold points and the amount of timing

pulled out.

The water temp usually does rise when a car is pinging.

You can have the power FC pull out huge numbers of timing at 80 degree's water temp if the tuner so desires.

Butters,

The point is if its pinging enough for it to have an effect on water temps then you won't have to worry about it pinging for much longer.. Smashed ring lands. Extremely silly for the tuner to suggest not to worry as water temp correction is not designed as a bandaid for a motor with excessive detonation.

As I said.. I've had mine pinging, also have datalogit logs and there is no noticable increase in water temp.

As soon as it pings I get off it. Keep holding your foot down and your asking for a stuffed motor.

I set the pfc to pull out ignition timing once it hits 90degree's+.

An RB with the correct thermostat should run in the low to mid 80's in cold weather. Temps may rise a touch to ~90degree's or so in hot weather with the a/c on.

no kidding ... lol

Yep I agree. It is a safety net for when shit goes wrong.

I've got some datalogit logs that show quite the opposite. A tune with too much timing made the car run hot.

Dropping the timing, dropped the knock numbers and directly dropped the water temps

Just my experiences though

sorry mate, but this is crap. I have a stock BOV on a GT3076 Turbo, running 18psi and there is absolutely no leaking. I've changed it, and no difference, and then I changed it back because my car sounded like a wanker.

and no once again this is absolute rubbish.

The ONLY reason the powerfc pulls timing out of the car when its hot is to PREVENT pinging.

There is absolutely NO way pinging can make the temps rise so dramatically. Not a chance in hell. I'd put money on the engine going BOOM! before the water temp rose 10 degrees.

Which part ? you agree below it does pull out timing based on water temp ?

Yes as I said above I agree, its a safety net.

Now first there is several levels of ping. My loggin is of mid to high knock numbers from 30 - 50. So you probably wouldn't class that as the same dramatic ping that this poor fella is getting.

Next is how much $$ you got to bet ???

lol j/ks

I think it's safe to say that there's been enough arguing. Your tuner needs to tune it propelry, either that or your car's f**ked.

either way is fine.

I really don't understand where the issue is. Pinging, put more fuel, less timing. simple as that.

who tuned it? have they tuned pfcs before?

Yeah already got apexi pod. Just got a nismo fuel pump.

The car runs alot better now. I just played with the boost controller setting. Before the car was laggy and really sluggish, but since playing with the boost controller the car feels much better to drive.

boost comes on earlier and harder i even dropped the duty cycle down so max boost is only 16psi. just bumped up the gain value and start boost setting. Midrange is much stronger

I'm happy with it for now.
