Its basically just a shock absorber similar to the dampers in you suspension. Its conected between the top of the engine and the body of the car.

It stops the engine from vibrating as much and stops it twisting on the engine mounts due to high levels of torque.

It does this through vibration isolation, which basically means that when the engine is vibrating more due to it getting closer to its own harmonic frequency, this vibration is absorbed by the damper and not transfered to the chasis. Below is a picture so you get an idea :blink:
