I have an R33 GTS-T 4door ('94), and just recently when I start my car there is a noise coming from the dash or somewhere in that general area that sounds like a pulsing beat. It sounds as if something is trying to move or open and is getting stuck or held back by something. Kind of like the sound a pedestal fan makes when you try and stop it from oscillating. My friend, who dyno tunes ands works on alot of Skylines says its a common problem with them but he is not sure what it is.

Please help. If anyone knows what it is and how to fix it please let me know.

when i reset my ecu (disconnect the battery) and then re connect. after a drive or when i start it up, it makes a ticking king of noise. sounds like someones on a typewriter.. i assume its just the ecu , but i dunno if your in the same boat. it goes away after 2 or 3 drives . i.e happens less and less

Nah this noise happens almost everytime i start the car and only lasts for 10-20 seconds then stops. I've been told that it may be a problem with the aircon unit. See link below:

I know what you mean. It sounds like a windscreen wiper motor going back and forth twice. Very faint though can hardly hear it.

thought it was just my car hehehe

I wouldn't mind knowing what that sound is too, it comes from inside the dash

One of the motors for the air vents perhaps... could be catching on something or broken. Just try'n pin point where exactly the noise is coming from, if it's behind the plastics dash facia thing pull it apart and have a look. There's DIY how to pull dash apart if needed, it's fairly easy to do though.

Its something to do with the fans from memory.

There is a post on here somewhere as well as a how to fix it tutorial. Not really worth fixing though. Its a whole dash out job.

It causes no damage anyway.

that my friends is the motor that directs the air flow for the aircon/heater system. its a little servo and over time the gears wear down and they start to slip. when i bought my r33 it was making the same noise and the dealer i bought it off fixed it before i picked it up. massive job, whole dash and aircon system needs to come out as its right down near the firewall on the inside of the car. good luck with that one...

  • 2 weeks later...

its the charming noise of 33 owners, very common, something to do with climate control unit, which i ve heard people have replaced and they go again in 6 months or so.. try moving the direction of air on different settings every time you start it and see where is happy meduim is.. i use to vent my on fresh air both face and leg postion and it didnt make a sound, though on other postions knocked persistenlty..you got to love it hey

I find there are two noises. There is the noise that is the climate control. The best way to reduce this noise I found was to turn the fan speed up to full for a bit then turn it back down again and the noise seems to be a lot less noticable.

The other pulsing noise that I think JodieR33Chick is refering to actually comes from behind the dash. My car made that noise for a few weeks after I got my car. Then it mysteriously went away and only comes back very occaisionally. I thought it may have to do with the dramatic change in climate from Japan to Australia (I'm first Aussie owner) and that it was something behind the dash expanding in the heat. It may sound stupid but I don't know how else to explain the pulsing noise as it seems to be so inconsistent.

i also sometimes come across that problem...it definately has something to do with the aircon unit....it sounds like the motor is sliping or someting weird is going on....best thing to do is to play around with the settings and it just might go away....i have my airflow at the leg and sometimes when i do switch it to face it makes the ticking noise but only when i turn the car off and on again....so best in my situation was have it pointing to the leg....u most likely have to play aroung and hopefully it goes away for you....best of luck

yeh mine only happens when i start the car up, even if i dont have the aircon or anything on, just thumps for about 4 seconds and thats it, never happens again until i start the car again\strange.
