hey everyone, my first post on this forum, i curently own and drive a mazda 626 wagon 88' model, but im upgradeing to an r33 series 2, m spec with nismo skirts, manual, black, comes with 18's, i put my deposit down today, test drove it a few weeks ago and i loved everything about it, the questions i have is, in buying a second hand fresh import, what problems are typical? like what should i be looking for on the car that could be wrong, im good with cars, and mechanics so be as technical as you can be, the car is stock apart from having 18's, any advice of sugestions will be greatly apreciated :D

thanks to anyone who can help, cheers.

just make sure you buy one in that wasn't highly modified and detuned. you should be able to tell if anything's been fiddled with in the engine bay eg. nuts and bolts are a little rounded, front bar was chopped a bit to make room for fmic.. also, what i found from experience with looking into imports was seeing if there was a fair amount of gravel+rocks in the rear guards - you can pretty much guess what the car was used for ay... (no, not rally... :D )

series 2 dont really have any problems. i dont think there was a factory recall for this model, but you will need to look out for the odd misfire from the ignition coils in a series 2.

deriq.

this is what i did

check around all bolts to see if stuff has been taken out of the engine bay and put back in (especially front lights), you can tell because it will leave a brighter color paint mark under the rim of the original bolt/screw placement.

check all panels line up nice and shmick

check around back side window rubbers for wear

check and compare every panel to eachother if there is any tiny difference then its probly been in a smash

make sure EVERYTHING works on the interior, air con,cd player and radio, ariel, hazards lights, ect.

if u wanted to go all out you get get an independant inspector to go over it for a few hundred bucks, might be worth it if the deal your getting seems too good to be true or even just for peace of mind.

i woudlnt hand over a single cent until you have had the car checked out propperly by someone who knows imports

heck, even racq (or equivalent) will provide you with a list of problems

u would have to be mad not to

There is only so many things you can inspect while the car is parked on the ground.

Taking it to a good mechanic could mean the difference between you buying a car that looks great but is full of rust/has been damaged in an accident OR a car that looks great and IS GREAT mechanicly.

You see a whole new world once it is up on a hoist. Also dont be afraid to give it a good boost session. If the seller wont let you boost it up....ask him to do it. If he gives you some crap like "i dont thrash my car" then chances are he might be hiding shit.

  • 3 weeks later...

should have replyed earlyer, i bought the car, its bloody awsome, the racv check came back with basicly nothing wrong apart from a small burn hole on the back seat, and monior pinging, which in driving it for the past 3 weeks i havnt noticed any of, im runing it on 95octane caltex vortex, very very happy with the car, took her down the great ocean road last night, briliant car to drive thru the corners, didnt even have 2 push the gas pedel much, nothing above 3k and quarter throttle, loveing it. eventually when im off my P's i plan to get a fmic, run a little higher boost and get a full turbo back exaust, should make it a little more fun than it already is :laughing-smiley-014: pics of my baby are below
