Hey fellas

I just got my pod filter from Slide (thanks Aaron) and after installing it I've noticed something I didn't expect. Basically there is a really loud rushing air sound whenever I come on boost. I was looking forward to a bit more induction noise, but this is just embarrasing.

I've never put a pod filter on a turbo before, but on an N/A engine you just get a deep throaty growl and I was expecting something similar with perhaps a bit of a gushing sound when the BoV opened.

Is this constant rushing sound normal for turbos or is my blow off valve knackered?

Cheers guys

SII R33 GTS25t

(Stock other than Apexi pod)

Normal.

D'oh!

I guess I'll have to buy a box to muffle it a bit.

I mean, this is... really quite loud. I haven't heard any others sound quite like this.

(lol, the man buys a pod filter for the induction noise... then complains about the induction noise)

Anyone else?

Cold air box?

I got the same noise bro, sucking hard then realeased when the foot comes off the gas..

Totally normal IMO

Oh yeah Cold air box/heat sheild will help a little in muffle

Stock air box performs much better than a pod on it's own. and probably just as good as a pod with CAI and sealed box.

Sell pod. put stock air box back on.. remove the little sponge thing in the air box (not sure if the R33's have them). it is just for noise reduction. and there you go..

better performance, and a little bit more noise..

it has got a bit of a wank factor when passing by.. especially when people do it on purpose. i had a pod for a little while and the noise got very anoying very quickly. swapped back to the airbox and its nice n quiet. plus your going to get more out of it than a heatsoaky pod.

 So your telling us that the people who make PODS who spend $$$ in R&D and tell you that it FLOWS BETTER than a stock air-box are full of shit and that a POD filter in its own enclosure fed by a CAI is worse than a stock airbox which has been seen in many models over many car makes in many years as a restriction when modifying your car...

I hear ya mate, but there are plenty of fast cars with airboxes, take a look at the mines 34 GTR

Mine's R34 does run a stock airbox true... you got them there...

I have this idea, how far away from the turbo can you mount the Pod filter, I have one of those cheap fmic kits and now i got a CAI where the spare intercooler hole is under the pod, what If i drop the pod thru the hole with smooth bends from steel tubing.

Thanks for all that guys - I appreciate the help - and not berating me too much for being a nanna about the noise :laughing-smiley-014: .

After a second drive, the noise is actually starting to grow on me, especially now I know nothings broken. I think I'm going to get a box for it though because I think it's loud enough to attract PC Plod and I'd like to muffle it a bit. And I reckon I'll stick the old box back on when I go on long drives. I can imagine cruising down south for a few hours it would start to grate on me.

It shouldn't be boosting while your cruising hence no noise, unless your driving up hills.

I can confirm R33's do have the sponge thing, as I recently took mind out, breaking half of the pins

Keyword there - stock airbox.

You put a decent flowing panel filter into the airbox and you'll find that there is no really difference from that and a pod until your making some seriously big power.

I think Dezz did a back-to-back test Airbox & Pod (no cai boxing) on the dyno, there was a marginal increase in power and a skerrick in mid range.

However, the increase was so small that you would not notice nor feel on the street. The extra 2 or 3kw is dick all in the big picture for a street car.

And i would go on a leg to say if it was in a secenario with high under bonnet temps the pod would let you down noticeably

Basically for a streeter upto 250rwkw. Your better off with the airbox than a CAI/Pod setup if you look at the cost vs gain if your on a budget.

As it leaves money to be better spent in other areas
