Moving To Sydney From Melb

Hey pples,

this is a bit of an early call but a month or so ago i recieved a job offer for a grad position in the Sydney office of a large company. The job begins in Feb but im gonna come up this June/July to start looking for a place to rent.

Well ive never been to Sydney so i have no idea where to start looking, but going from the melways, Bondi Junction seems an ok area since i will be travelling to Martin station everyday and its only 4 stations away.

I dont know whether any of u guys have been to Melbourne at all, but i wanna live in a place similar to the Sth Yarra or Richmond areas of melbourne, ie, trendy, coffee culture, nice ladies walking around lots of nice cafes and bars that are open late... u get the picture. I've heard bad stories about Kings Cross and if its anything like St.Kilda i don wanna be there.

So yea, any advice is much appreciated or if u know any1 looking for a housemate around the same time, pass his details onto me.

I'll be driving my r33 up after im all settled in and hopefully I can get involved with the community and track days now that ill be getting a decent salary package

Kings Cross is a lot worse than St Kilda, but its probably the closest comparison. Kings Cross is Sydney's Red light / party district, but its a lot rougher. If anything, St Kilda reminds me of Oxford St in Darlinghurst (aside from the fact that Oxford St is traditionally a gay area).

Oh, and if you expect stuff to be open late like in Melbourne you're in for a big disappointment. However, Bondi Junction does sound close to what you want. However, the last time I went down to Bondi on a Saturday night nearly everything was closed by midnight.

Inner city, like Glebe, might also come close since there are a few unis nearby, but once again everything closes.

If your cafe culture interests is more like Lygon St, then try Leichardt. Norton St is pretty much like a smaller version of Lygon.

Im currently working in bondi junction at the moment.

I would say for renting.. the places are small.. not alot of them have garages and they are expencive..

What about Alexandria they have nice complexes out there most with double LUG and it is close to transport and less then 8k's to the CBD

Just remember though - those inner city places will struggle for good secure parking if you want your own SLUG/DLUG

It might sound hard but allot of people live in the Central Coast and travel on the train each day.

This may be a option ?

This I would think is cheaper and would be easier to get a nice place with a car park

Bondi Junction is one of the most expensive places to rent and live in Sydney so, how much are you going to want to spend on an apartment per week?

Bingo, before we start recommending possible suburbs that might suit you, its probably best that you give us an idea of what sort of weekly rental outlay you are happy to bare.

chatswood is the best.....i miss living there..........close to the city, close to beach, lots of shopping, plenty of place to eat.......

Im going to be working near martin station so i need a place that i can get there by train in 15 - 20min max.

I really want a place with a couple of bedrooms like an apartment or town house kinda thing, wouldnt mind sharing either and rent of about 250 - 300 a week i thought would be reasonable. (500 - 600 if shared)

for a shared apartment you could get something for around 300.

best bet is to look on www.realestate.com.au to give you an idea of what you're up for.

we've bought quite alot of properties through searching on that website.

also, i MAY have a house opening up for $280 p/w in Padstow (if current tenants refuse the new rate). it is a bit out of the way, but its a 30sec walk to the station.

If you want stuff open Darlinghurst area might be the go. Kinda trendy but also can be ghetto. If you need more info lemme know, also I live about 500m from the cross and I don't think it's so bad, you just gotta choose the right place..... Getting a place with a garage?

ok, basically you need to team up with someone else who's got $300 per week too. then look at a nice place in the forum on norton st leichardt. cost will be around $600 per week but you can get a nice place. 15 mins to the city by bus, lots of cafes restaurants, bars etc in that area.
