10 Inch Vs 12 Inch Sub

I'm starting to look at subs for my work-in-progress project, and wondering how well 10" subs work? I've currently got a 12" in my other car, and worried a 10" might be significantly quieter?

What is better for sound quality, 10" because it can respond quicker? The driver will probably be two channels bridged, from a tru technology 4ch amp.

I want to keep as much of my boot as possible, so if a 10" can give me loud enough bass, i'd like to look for one which needs a small enclosure, and build this in under the parcel shelf.

Is this the Hicas unit, which i believe is ok to relocate? :

mate use a 10" if u wanna save space in the boot. all i did was relocate the battery and then bolt the hicas ecu and fuse box to my sub box side. works real well and still got heaps of space. battery went in the side of the boot, opposite area to where the jack goes

If that IS the hicas system, Why the hell do i have one?

Nissan fast came back with no hicas, and there is definatly no hicas system behind my diff.

Is it for something else?

  • 2 months later...

i managed to get 131.2 db out of a single 10in with only 125 wats in a custom box, and that was in a huge vt wagon. build the box right and you can make it louder than what alot of peoples 12in subs can do

A 10 can be just as loud as a 12. It all depends on how you set it up. The difference is a 10 will not play as low as a 12, unfortunately there is no replacement for cone area.

I reckon we go a 12 in your car Trav i dont know why u wanted a 10 to start with :P.

Im working on a sweet looking R34 at the moment you can come and have a look at with a fibreglass subbox.

My requirements are :

1. Sound QUALITY

2. Size, smallest enclosure possible to fit into vacant area on top of fuel tank.

I was leaning towards 10" just cause i thought it'd need a smaller enclosure?

if u wanted to go for the size and sound of a 12 inch sub with the space saving capabilities of a 10inch sub why not just get ur hands on some slimline earthquake 12 inch subs i believe the model number is SWS-12 they are a 600watts they are 3inch deep for mounting purposes and have over 2inches of long throw excursion rubber surround...... and they still give good bass becuz they are a quality sub... cant go past earthquake.... my next subs are gunna earthquake sub zeros like dr doof has or im gunna go the hole hog and get the earthquake HoLeeS 15 inch sub.. the things r crazy....... 15000 watts max power lol....... if u would like to check out the earthquake sws range any further goto www.earthquakesound.com it is an american site and the prices are in american dollars but im sure if u head down to ur local auto barn or car audio supplier they will be able to give u a rough price on them.... if i come across a pair for the right price i will be posting them up in here for sale will keep every one posted

From the "Biggest subs in an R33 boot" thread:

Re: HICAS Box -

Can't you just unbolt it, and move it if its in the way?

If You're comfortable that You know how HICAS works well enough, that You can relocate the control Box and not mess with the sensors in it, then by all means . . . . . knock yourself out Tiger ! !

Here's the work of art, that is My sub Box:

The big relief on top is to clear the HICAS Box, As U can see it's a TIGHT fit to get the 2x10" cones in, that box runs the entire height of the under-parcel-shelf area. It's 38 Litres, Which gives a flat response curve down to 70Hz, where it starts dropping away (like most sealed boxes do) to lose 3db at 45hz, & more below there. That's okay tho - I just give the 45hz boost on the Amp a lil' tweak to compensate. NoiCe ! !

I'm pretty sure moving the battery like this is considered illegal in some states, so I wouldn't recommend it to most people.

Plus the danger if you ever got hit in the rear quater.

I was considering putting my 10" sub in next to the battery sometime ago, but I ended up mounting the amp up there so I could put the boot interior back in and just having the sup box in the boot. Means I can take the sub out if I had to and you'd never know an of it was there.

i've mounted my sub similar to cheez's setup, however my sub is on the other side, I still have the battery there, as you can imagine its a tight fit, but I"m using a fairly shallow mounted 10" sub, with acoustic stuffing it sounds good enough for what i want. You have to REALLY get it loud ot head it reaching its limit, and its only on very low notes or frequencies. will post pics on request.

2 tens or 1 12?? ive got a 12 (in the right size vented inclosure.1.8ft. and its really good. but will 2 10's sound better in there respective enclosure's?

If its not too much hassle, IE building and cost, then yeah it will be worth it... Unless you have a shitty 12 in a shit box with a shit amp, its about as responsive as its going to get... You will lose some low down bass, but the added inches from 2 10s will fill in a lot of dead spots in your car... it will also sound somewhat punchier, and have more potential...

depending on a lot of things of course...

i have to 2x 10's at the moment, entry level eclipse SVC 200rms per, reveiving 250rms per, in a total of 1.9cuft and they sound fantastic, consistant 137dbs! upgradign to 2 Soundstream 10's(750rms) they will be fiberglass in the corners of the boot to retain the centre boot space.

fiberglass enclosures are your friend!

i have run (not all at the same time) 1 x 10", 1 x 12", 2 x 10", 2 x 12", and to be honest there isn't a lot in it. a single 12 will sound better than a single 10" but once you go double they sound similar. i ran 2 10's in a festiva and if you cranked it up you could make the engine stall. it would make you feel sick after about 1 song
