hey all

got a new set of rims measuring 17x8 front and 17x9 rear.

whats the best street tyres to get at the moment?

im thinking 235/45/17 at the front and 255/45/17 at the rear but ist possible to have 265 or even 275 for the 9" rear rims?

its a daily driver so im not interested in street legal semi slicks.

yeah which brand and model tyres would you recommend?

say for a budget of around $1500.

any advice is much apreciated. thanks.

you can fit 265's onto a 9" rim no problems. However it won't provide you with as much latteral grip as a 245 or 255 tyre as there will be a lot more flex in the tyre due to the way it fit's onto the rim.

your idea of 235 fronts and 255 rears is perfect IMO.

for which tyre best suits read the tyre thread at the top of this page :)

depending on brand of tyres you go for you may be better off going for a 225 on the front and a 235 on the rear.

if you go for cheap brand tyres then go for a 275 rear, it will fit.

but if you go something quality like a S-03 Bridgestone you will only need 225 front and 235 rear

i have 265 on my 9" inch rims looks good as far as handling goes I'd probably go 235 or 245. I picked up 265's for 160 each there federals so not the best tyre but good price :) be careful if you go 265's companies try charge you through the ass as the tyres are hard to come across

Why? why not go 235/255 with good tyres, why would you get skinnier tyres when you go to a better tyre? ontop of the fact 225's on a a 9" rim look retarded.

i also have 255 all round on 18x9 and they are spot on tyre fit i reckon

I would go a 225 on the front and 235 rear. or if you want you can go 235 front and 245/255 (depends on availability).

Amongst my cars I've had:

235 all round on 9inch rims (GTR)

245 all round on 9 inch rims (GTR)

255 all round on 9 inch rims (GTR)

235 all round on 9inch rims (GTST)

225 front (i think, they may be 235) on 8 inch rims and 255 rear on 9 inch rims (soarer).

the 255s are ok on the 9, but I reckon 235 or 245 will be better (a lot depends on tyre brand though).

If you are putting them on a skyline and you dont want your speedo to be out the closest match to stock (205/55/16 225/50/16) is 255/40/17

245/40 is close as well but 245/45 is by memory 3.3% too fast.

I currently have 245/45 but have always in the past had 255/40, i think this is a better size than the 245s which have a taller sidewall but get slightly stretched across the rim.

I believe stock r33gtr is 245/40 but most owners just replace with 245/45 due to availability.

265s usually bulge out a bit on 9inch rims, doesnt look good IMO and probably allows for a bit more sidewall flex.

Read the tyre thread for opinions on tyres. With that budget you can get top of the range street tyres so it just depends on what compromise you want.

I'm running 17x8 on the fronts and 17x9's on the rears .

optimal tyres settings I've found so far are 235(45 profile) fronts and 255(40 profile) for daily use.

I guess it also comes down the design of the sidewalls and the profile. I'm running Bridgestones Potenza S-02's (best tyres ever!) on the rear which have a great sidewall and tread pattern to suit wide rims (I've had 2 styles of S-02's so far and the 1st pair of 255's stretched over rims more while the 2nd pair sat evenly without stretching, Later on I found out the S-02's were designed for specific cars, 1st ones were for a Porsche 993 while the 2nd was for a HSV).

You should also really take into account the offset of the rims your running too, against the tyres your thinking of putting on otherwise you may risk rubbing your guards.

its been covered but still to 255 on the rear, i had 9" with 255 and suited to the ground, and now i have 275 on 10 which is just as good....you dont want to stretch it, just get a wider rim.....go the 275's

225/50/16 112.6 sidewall (406mm wheel + 225mm = 631 diamter)

255/40/17 is 102mm (so total diameter would be 17 inch 432mm + 204mm = 636 diamter)

245/40/17 has a sidewall of 98mm (432+196 = 628)

245/45/17 has a sidewall of 110 (432+220=652)

so the closest to stock diameter is 245/40. but to be honest speedo accuracy has never bothered me a bit. the speedo is only accurate to about 10% to begin with anyway.

and no, standard 33 GTR size is 235/45/17 not 245.

Yeah ~3% is not enough to bother me either which is why i went for the 245/45s... and as you say speedo only has to be within 10%, but i dont believe that the stock 33 gtr tyre size is 235/45/17 i am sure it is 245/ either 40 or 45 as mentioned by t04gtr.

Speaking of wrong compliance stickers i have one on my own car, it states that 255/40/17 is a standard size.

seems I could be wrong. I was just remembereing the japanese sticker on the door jamb on my 33 GTR, BUT my memory is not that flash. I would say that call was 50% memory, 50% talking out of my arse.

and 225/45ZR17 91Y $305 each

both rolling diameter 636mm

I think that all the higher end bridgestones are overpriced, and if those prices you quoted are 'specials' then that proves my point :P

There are a few similar tyres that you can get for a fair bit less. Dig up motor magazine tyre test but off the top of my head but if i were looking at that type of tyre ring around for:

Dunlop sp-sport maxx

Falken fk-452

Falken rt-615 (higher performance worse treadwear)

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

All of those tyres have similar performance to the S03 but cost less.

Tempe has the 615s in 225/45/17 for ~$275, and you can get the sport maxxs for a good price right now from a few places in 235/45.

    • Try fabricating something like this and install it under the pedals? Not sure if it's legal or not....
    • Even though I have some pretty good (brand) ratchet ringies, I avoid using them to break open tight bolts. A broken ratchet is very annoying.
