Hi guys, ive been looking at getting a r32 gtst. I was looking at spending no more than $10K. Will i be able to get a good, clean car for this price? I live in SA btw.

Also, many of my friends are vs commodore drivers and they keep telling me that an r32 gtst is much slower than a 6 cylinder commodore because the r32 has such a heavy body. Is this true? Are r32 turbos really that slow?

Finally, if i spent about $1000 on basic performance upgrades, what should i buy and what kind of performance gain would i see?

Thanks a lot. =)

well to start off with...r32 gtst's are not slow at all if anything a stock one with minor mods will prob be able to take on a 5ltr v8....being in SA and $10K for a r32 prob not at that price....if you want a nice and clean one you are most likely looking at $12-15K mark....and out of all skylines (r32, 33, 34) the r32 is the lightest....and if you can find a completely stock one...get a exhaust and front mount that way you can boost it up a bit...well good luck mate

do you think a turbo back exhaust would give noticeable performance? do intercoolers give any extra performance or do they just allow for higher boost. cause i dont really wanna boost the turbo above stock. how about aftermarket bov's?

Turbo back will get you 15 - 20 rwkw. Intercoolers dont actually give etra performance, but do come in handy for more boost. I think the stock bov is good as it is....though one of the other guys was saying he wants to change his to an r33 bov.

you definately CAN get a decent r32 gtst for that much. specially when you're in SA...

probably can, but the main reason it will be forsale for that low, is because:

1) the buyer is too poor to keep it, or desperate to get the money for it - therefore probably didn't maintain it either, which may lead to potential headaches further on

2) it's already half stuffed, so by the time you put in a new motor it's not so cheap anymore.

Also when you factor in the insurance cost of around $1000 a year, petrol of about $50 a week, and everything else $8-9k is only the start. Anyhow, there are bargains out there, but there are also a lot of ongoing costs.

15-20rwkw seems like an awful lot. thats approx 15-20% of stock performance. do skylines have really restrictive exhausts or something?

15-20 extra kw would be more than noticeable when driving wouldnt it?

im going by my r33 figures here - stock for r33 is around 137rwkw - and now its at 164rwkw - thats with a turbo back exhaust and pod filter.

i do find that the exhaust made the car more responsive too....

wow, and they're less than $1000. I got a cat back for my dads 86 NA supra (i drive it), and that didnt give much of a performance boost at all. whats the difference between cat back and turbo back?

turbo back - is all the way from the turbo - the xforce system is only 900 or so from just jap....

I just bought a R32 gts-t for $8500, basically all it needs is a new diff coz one of the bearings is extremely loud, interior is perfect(apparently done 140,000kms) except one cut in passenger door, only a few minor dents in paint. The guys supplied me with RWC and a compression test, the compression was fairly low but I was expecting to spend $12500 for something like this so I have plenty for a new engine, also when on boost its starting to smell oily so I think I may need a new turbo(only $150). It even came with whiteline strut braces front and rear, 3" turbo back exhaust, and boost controller.

I was looking for a car for months though so don't except one to be available straight away.

    • All I can say Duncan is good luck and I hope that Neil did not run any E85 in Cheryl. I have recently experienced the full spectrum of fuel tank issues in my R33's that had been caused by E85 and contaminated fuel. When you take the cover off the top of the tank and have a look inside you will get an understanding of how easy it will be. Best case situation is clean fuel with minimal contamination. My GTR was like this and it was a very simple operation to just grab the fuel pump carrier bracket and slide it up and out of the tank. My three GTS_T's had different levels of fuel contamination that was probably caused by E85 in the fuel.  In the worst case all of the metal components in the tank had rusted to the point where there were pieces of rusted metal swirling around in the tank. This required the removal of the exhaust, the tailshaft, the complete rear cradle and the fuel tank. The components in the tank were that rusted that it took days to get the fuel pump carrier and the mounting brackets out of the tank. When the tank was finally cleaned, everything inside the tank had to be replaced. With the tank all back together I could then reinstall it in the car along with everything else that had to come out. Good luck and I hope that you find a clean tank.
    • It is a two door. It is black and also still has the OEM wheels and stereo. Exact model would be KR_R32RGFEL_SS According to GTR-Registry.com is a 2 Door Coupe; RB20DE; 2WD no HICAS; MT.F5; (11L) Projector Headlamps and Fog Lights; (12_) Electronic Active Full Auto Air Con (Climate Control); (13-14SS) V Selection -- Which seems to be accurate description of my variant. Will try to upload a few pictures soon. The OEM wheels look like the below image. Image is taken from the goo-net-exchange website.

    • Welcome Gabriel. At least your car has a glorious RB and not the shitty CA18. As MBS206 mentioned all the good bits can be added later. Two doors or four?
    • And half of them have been converted to turbos.
