Hey guys

Not sure if its just me

But i added a Cold air box to my car on the weekend and my can now feels like it has less power than it did without it.

has anyone else come accross this before

how can i find out if the air box is not doing the car any good without getting on a dyno.

Cheers

Man thats wierd!!! The cold air box should not make you lose any power. Are giving it a proper Air feed??? What kind of air box r u using?? by the way I think your cars hot!!!

thanks dude

Maybe its just me i dont know but something dosnt feel right. maybe a ecu reset may be a good idea.

as for an air feed i dont really have one there it just the hole where the factory pipe use to be which im yet to Duct.

well theres your problem... if you had the snorkel before, and then took it off and didnt do the CAI properly, you wont be getting cold air... you will see a dip in performance...

do the CAI and it should be a lot better :bunny:

I was ment to say where the factory intercooler pipe use to be.

The hole under the air filter.

The factory snorkel and airbox is long gone

I have a HKS pod filter and a CAI that encloses the pod filter in the corner.

Hmmm weird...

What sort of airbox enclosure do you have man? Make sure its not enclosed too much otherwise you might not be getting as much air as you need to. Try ducting it and see if that helps; all you need is to put some piping from where the side mount used to be into your airbox (im sure plenty others on the forums have done it before).

Unless its a major drop in power it shouldnt be an ECU problem. Try getting some good air to it first.

Cheers buddy :bunny:

just cause you have a box around a pod filter doesn't make it cold air induction...

are you saying you have a new pipe pulling in cold air that goes through the factory intercooler piping hole? or have you not done that yet?

An ecu reset is always a good idea. Im thinking it is to do with air feed. Maybe take the box off and see if your car goes back to normal. If it does then its an issue of not enough air. Did the car run well without a box or was it suffering from heatsoak???

I do not have the Ducting in the factory hole Yet but im going to.

Car ran well with out the box but people kept say you should box that pod in car will go better haha so i did.

maybe heat is getting into the box and not getting out so it is making the box act like a pod heater not a cold air box.

ill check for major gaps and add the ducting and reset the ECU

Then will get back to you all with some pictures.

but mean wile im still keen for other peoples ideas

i cant imagine the heat buildup getting worse for installing a shield around the POD.. even without proper ducting, just having a hole at the bottom of the box to draw air in from behind/below the headlight (as mentioned above), should see an improvement. therefore it sounds like somethings gone wrong in the installation. check all piping, make sure POD was reinstalled correctly. maybe clean out POD if it was removed and put somewhere where it could have gotten dirty/blocked.

CAI's are a waste of time, especially when you have a large front mount. They just confine the amount of air the engine can suck in.

When you're traveling along at speed it's not like the hot air from around the turbo is going to travel backwards towards the air intake...

Agreed. You don't get heatsoak when your driving. Exposed pod with cold air routing FTW. Oh wait, except if your not in QLD it's probably illegal to have an exposed pod.....muahaha. QLD FTW.

na induction noise is still pretty loud

one thing I should add is I also put my Exhaust Silencer back in the same day that could help with playing mind games I guess.

Your silencer robs you of power. It restricts your exhaust. Restricted exhaust = less power.

Yeah take the silencer off thats probs your dilemna. you wont get heatsoak while driving especially with that massive cooler. Heatsoak would occur when your at traffic lights on a hot day and you'll feel loss of power upon take off.

Exactly x 2, with the exhaust silencer you restrict so much air flow and create a lot of back pressure just take it off and you notice the power back up again, it might also help if you finished off the air ducting from your front bar to the stock intercooler hole so there is more airflow into the airbox.

    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
