Hey All,

I am currently test fitting my GT3082R with Low mount HKS manifold on my RB20 in my R31. I am having several issue with the fitment of the turbo due to the large 4" inlet of the turbocharger.

The main issue is that the 4" inlet is hitting on (what I call) the engine mount's flex limiter. It is a piece of metal that stops the rubber mount moving too far and thus cracking. (I have already "trimmed" the heat sheild on the mount just enough for the compressor cover to fit).

I have several solutions in my head, and I am considering:

Safety (IE modifying the engine mount too much).

Life (IE the life of the engone mount rubber if modified).

Performance (IE changing to a different compressor cover).

I have several options as far as I can tell.

1. Change the comp cover to a smaller inlet size. Issues here are the turbo's performance and where its power curve will be affected (I understand it is a percision piece of equipment and really really do not want to modify it).

2. Take 1/2" off the piece of metal it is hitting on (The mount is not structually dependent on the stopper). I can then possiably use an engine dampner on the car to help with the missing 1/2 inch of stopper.

The next issue of this is that the turbo inlet (when I say inlet I mean the 4" piece of metal not the whole compressor cover) still may hit the engin mount when coming off power. (IIRC the RB20's crank goes clockwise therefore under torque the engine will flex towards the drivers side of the car, correct?) Therefore as mentioned when backing off the throttle the turbo could still bounce into the engine mount rubber (even with the piece of protruding flex plate out of the way). - That is where an engine dampener comes in and I would have to keep a careful eye on things.

If the turbo hits I will be causing damage to the following things.

A. Turbo inlet (whacking it out of shape)

B. Turbo Itself from the whack, cracking / breaking shit

C: Manifold

D. Manifold studs

E. Head of engine ripping manifold / studs out of the head

That a pretty decent assesssment, yeah?

Thats about All I have to vent about.

Point 1. I dont want to lose performance

Point 2. I really dont want to start breaking shit.

I have spent a fair bit of cashola on the manifold. Purchasing it, and getting ultra high temp HPC coating on it. I would prefer the low mount due to its stealth factor and its strength being cast.

The other issue is there a compressor cover available from Garrett that will work. EG, it may fit onto the cartridge, but might foul on the compressor blades.

Any help / suggestions would be suggested. I am pretty DIY with things so NO im not taking it to a shop for something I can sort out with a little guidance.

Time for a beer after that rant.

Thanks

-Jez

Garrett do make an alternative compressor housing for the GT3082R and GT3582R . Its a direct replacement on the XR6 spec GT3582R (which is the same compressor end as your turbo) but wil probably need the alternate adapter ring . This housing uses the same size inlet and outlet as a non port shrouded T04E housing ie ~ 2.75" in / 2" out (70mm / 51mm) . GCG sell them as an upgrade for the XR6 people so you could try them .

Cheers A .

    • I would be lying if I said I wasn't interested in what MCM were going to do with the NC I really enjoy their banter and occasional collaborations (like Alan from TSF, Ben from BCW, or any of the Haltech guys throwing around their experience), and I have probably watched everything they have put out
    • Not yet, we basically drove it to a private road, got the logs and drove it straight back. I think I need a new passenger seat belt after the mrs squeezed the life out of it.
    • Sounds insane! 🤤🤤🤤  Do you have any vids of it driving?  A flyby would be nice!
    • The prices of NCs are going to go up thanks to you... and partially the MCM guys.
