Hi all,

Have a GTR R33 that is almost complete just waiting on a Greddy 6 speed gearbox that is being built,

It a full Dog Gearbox with straight cut gears etc...i have never had experience with this gearbox so...

My question is....

What is the drivability like ?

The Car wont be driven all that often But are u able to get to A to B without to much hassle?

Basically i want to know if its possible to drive the car 'normally' and change at lower rev's?

Any help at all...

Would be great to hear from people who have had this gearbox

Cheers

tony

You could drive it around normally. However, it will be whiney, noisey and clunky to drive as it is a dog box with straight cut gears. You will also have to change gears more agressively as they tend to need to be smacked in with more force than a normal box. Too slow a change will result in crunching as the gears don't have the softer meshing like helicals have. The difference is akin to upgrading from a stock spring clutch to a multi-plate solid clutch.

Enjoy >_<

PS, rev matching helps

I had to drive Mark Phillips fully blown drifter round with the dog box and i can tell you it was a piece of piss to live with, the TRUST ones are made by QUAIFE and are super strong except for reverse.... be very gentle with reverse as there were many compromises made to fit a 6spd gear set in a 5spd case.

Thanks to the feedback people : )

Any addition information or experiences feel free to post up..

Oh and I forgot the mention the car is running a brand spanker OS Tripple plate

When selecting reverse do i need to slowly select the gear?

Whats the go?

I had a trust box in my car for quiet sometime driving around on the street.

its alrite once your moving. 1st you need to push hard to get into.

other than that i found it fine! very noisy which i liked!

not the best thing for using to drive but it isnt as bad as made out to be either!

as said before they focused on making 6 forward gears with the trust/quaife box, so reverse is rather small. and does wear out it will round the corners off the gear which means it wil pop out of gear. (just hold in in reverse and you will have no problems!)

i got a HKS 6 speed dog box. unfortuately i havent fitted yet so i can't give you any personal experience but the guy a brought it of gave me a few pointers.

1. you will have to be aggressive and forceful with it.

2. it is noisy and crunches

3. rev / speed matching helps alot. he spent alot of time watching the tach and speedo when changing

4. if you miss getting a gear you will most likely have to come to a complete stop and start again from first. (not sure why that would be the case)

5. reverse is very fragile. ensure the car is not rolling forward when selecting. If you rolling forward it will go into reverse and even if your just moving forward when you pop the clutch it will break reverse.

I would suggest if you have to park on a slop you park so that you can drive out rather than back out.

On another subject, does anyone know if you can flat change a dog box? I'm going to be running a Bee R style rev limiter for drags which is supposed to enable flat shifting, is this still possible with a dog box.

cheers

you can clutchless shift and i guess if your going to keep into it you could flatchange too but it may require some clutch assistance

about the missing a gear. it isnt really a problem. its just the same as any other box! you just have to try and select it again.

rev matching your gears is very helpful as you said. i actually had mine pretty good it doesnt take long to pick it up.

it also helps to say select 6th or a close by gear and then select reverse. as sometimes reverse was a bit tricky!

wow you guys are aggressive!!!

I've driven 2 cars in the past with dogboxes daily and it's not that bad unless you are stuck in bumber to bumber traffic.

First gear, clutch in and wait for the input shaft to slow down before you put it into gear. Upshift, just double clutch and shift into the nxt gear. Downshift will require a little bit of rev match and double clutch. If you get too much noise or pain in your left hand from the dog engagement....you are not doing it right.

YOU SHOULD ONLY CLUTCHLESS SHIFT AT HIGH SPEED.

Ah yeah double clutchin, good point. A must on down shifts. Better start practicing heal and toe driving lol.

yeah i did find the dog box best at high speed :woot: and the traffic was a killer

Have you ever driven a dog box? alot of what you have written is total BS

missing a gear does not mean coming to a complete stop for starters.

    • Starting with issues 1 - 5, we have already run into a problem...!  Issue #4 contained 2x front brake calipers, instead of 1 caliper and 1x steering knuckle. Will have to call DeAgostini on Monday to sort it out. Anyway here's some photos.  Issue #1 is the front bumper, headlights and number plate. Issue #2 is the front wheel (with "We produced with spartan air." text on the centre cap!) and tyre, the front lip spoiler and cylinder head cover with ignition coils under the centre cover... which will never be seen again. Issue #3 is the bonnet and cylinder head. Issue #4 is the front strut, brake disc (with laser etched metal discs) and brake caliper. I stopped here because of the issue with the missing steering knuckle.  Next update will be #5 - #10 in a few weeks.
    • DeAgostini is one of a few companies that release quite large (the largest commonly available size actually) 1/8 scale models in a series of weekly issues over 100 - 110 instalments.  They release different models for different markets and DeAgostini Japan have release the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo last month. I've made two of these 1/8 scale sized cars (one an R35 GT-R from 2012 - 2014, the other I'm just about halfway through, a BNR34 Skyline GT-R from the 2Fast 2Furious movie) so when this R32 was announced there was no way I could ignore it as it's my favourite out of all Nissans.  Each issue costs around $20 so it costs about $2.2K when completed. I suppose it is very expensive for what it is, but the quality and details are really very good, and there are many "gimmicks" like fully functioning exterior and interior lights operated with a remote control, working steering, all doors/bonnet/boot/fuel lid open and close, the side mirrors fold in and it even has a speaker for the engine revving sounds when you turn the lights on.  Each issue comes with a magazine that tells the story of the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo from the first design stages of the BNR32 to Group A homologation and the various racing version that were run in the Japanese Group A and JGTC, and Australian Group A.  So I plan to update the build in this thread 5 issues at a time.  https://deagostini.jp/r32/?srsltid=AfmBOooKjxDc4EUK2rmXqMBPgyHfFJ24s4oEPJBNpnF-lFlsRoW0PE6P
    • As per title.. has anyone used so far? Keen to hear results, comparisons. In the market for a new mani for my new turbo. Any issues cracking?
    • Re read everything that has been written about this in this thread.. Let us know if you're still confused.
    • This would be a new pump with new gears. I'm just unclear on whether it's a good idea to run more oil pump flow if you don't actually need said flow. Oil level is set a minute or so after shutting off a warm engine so wouldn't the high RPM oil level in the sump end up lower all things equal? Plan is OEM clearances, main concern in my mind is whether the OEM pump can keep up with the flow requirements of any additional oil coolers.
