Members Rides Section

Dear Sau,

I want to post up some pics and info as i have made changes and lap times and motorkhana results etc...

almost all other car forums seem to have a section for members to post up their rides

(ie one thread per car etc)

is there a reason we dont?

Sounds like a good idea that requires some thought.

I've got a few things to ask though to see what's around in peoples minds

Have you been using the 25+ page lap times thread?

Its updated as people post up (on the first page) etc. So its current with who is where with their PB's and what not.

And for pics, does the Photography section not cover the posting of pictures in some way?

Can we improve that maybe?

Just throwing a few reasons back as each new section makes the forum a little bit harder to manage

And i assure you currently its not an easy task, i personally spend a good 7-9 hours a week investigation/fixing/adjusting things forum wide

Especially a members cars one as it will fill up with "thats hot" "looks sick" etc etc.

Just senseless whoring of threads and before you know it such a thread is 5 pages long without much more than a few decent posts. Its hard for someone to police that day in, day out and as a section grows, it becomes a full time job, and we are trying to reduce the amount of work Mods/Admins have to do rather than increase.

And being our forum is one of the largest car ones around, it makes it very hard imagine 20% of people post. Thats 6,000 threads

I agree with Ash, its a good idea allthough there already alot of sections on the forum that it can fall under.

I believe some of the state sections even have a members ride thread that you can add too as well as the PB threads that are around the place.

Maybe a sub section in photography section specific to members rides could be added, but I'm sure that would be a lot of work for myself, Dan and Steve to keep it tidy and there is no real need for it tio be seperate from the photography main section.

I guess I would not see it as a bad or great thing to have, allthough it is one thing that SAU doesnt have that the majority of other car sites do seem to have

I've got a few things to ask though to see what's around in peoples minds

this is what i had in mind (a few examples)

PerformanceForums > Car Corner > PF Racers

PerformanceForums > Car Corner > PF Street Cars

Nissan Silvia > General Forums > Members Rides / Introductions

AU Starlet Club > Members Rides > Member's Starlets

AU Starlet Club > Members Rides > Member's other cars

...we are trying to reduce the amount of work...

How hard would it be to make a forum under " The World & Other Things" for "Our Rides", so that the thread starter could administer their OWN thread to a degree? They could delete any irrelivant posts to their thread, and add the usual pics, etc.

The advantage of having this outside the state forums, is so it can be shared nationally, and its all in the same spot, i think the idea suggested by Zennon is worth some thought.

No one is going to get access to administer anything

IPB as far as i can tell from the Admin panel, doesnt support something like that, so it would need to be a hack to the forum code.

And again, it requires someone to sit down and give days and days of their time to create something.

So in that respect it would be quite hard when there are lots of other things still to be done

*Member tags

*ACP fixes

*Trader rating system rework

*For sale section rework

And so on. That stuff alone is going to take more than a couple of weeks, probably months.

So it wouldn't be going down the self-moderated line.

The section, could be put anywhere really. That's not a great worry as such.

Its a quick one to sort out from that point of view.

Also a few more things i thought about since last post

1. Gallery's and blogs have been turned on for a while now. So you can put up your own pics, and write about your own progress.

So based on that, is there a need for a thread/section to do this as well when the facility is already there?

2. The forum bandwidth comes into it as well. Christian will have to assess that and see, as people uploading heaps of pics, loading and so on is going to increase traffic. Impossible that it wont. To boot, i notice you guys are not contributors/club members. So just remember that someone else is footing the cost for you to use this forum and fund every upgrade, as SAU doesnt exactly run for free

We cant increase traffic/costs without more money. So thats just another consideration

There will be feedback from Admins over the next week or two, i've posted up about it and we'll see what the consensus is.

I dont wanna promise the earth and then produce nothing!

Yes I am and have been for a while now - SAU just doesn't show the tag.

As for the whole members ride thing - I've calmed down now - I got what I needed.
