actually it's not a good idea in my book to go anything over about 40km/h. re-treads should be illegal. buy some good tyres. 15inch tyres are cheap as chips. for $500 you could get some decent tyres that will probably last 5 times your retreads and they will handle well, stop well and you'll have more fun driving.

hmm and only just then....we had retreads on the car trailer when we got it and blew all 5 within the first 3 months...bloody frustrating changing tyres all the time.

Anyway, there are cheap and OK tyres available, have a look at the "what tyres have you used" thread in here

re-treads are for ..... actually im not sure what they are good for :P

My old ladys old ae82 had retreads all its life, mind you the car was a piece of shit that wouldnt die minus the fact that if you could get to 100 in it you had a down hill and a long stretch of road.

Retreads are dangerous....

I remember as a young lad looking out the back window at the trailer while we were sitting on 100km/h down the freeway with a trailer on.

I saw the tread peel off and slap the guard as the tyre rotated. It took 2-3 slaps before the WHOLE guard of the trailer was removed. Amazing to watch.

Soon after that the trailer started to sway and the next thing I can remember was the arse end of the car being picked up and the rear wheels chirping as it swayed from side to side. Old man slammed the brakes and luckly we pulled up fine.

I ran a set of retreads once and had them removed as it felt as if the car was going sideways on 80km/h sweeping bends.. lol apparently it was the tread shifting on the tyres carcas. :S

Don't run them. You can pick up new tyres for cheap as these days.

What I don't get is how the NSW Government can bullshyt on about trying to make the roads safer by banning P platers from driving "high performance cars" (like the entry-level Mercedes C180K, with its neck-snapping 105kW), yet its still perfectly OK for them to roll around in an old non-V8 Falcodore on retreads.

The only thing retreads are good for is paddock bashers. On a road car, they should be illegal.

    • Yeah was thinking that. I've had the car go lower idle possibly around 650rpm every once in a long time after pouring fuel and would sound quite rough like a misfire, almost like it's shit fuel or something but who knows.

Great event last year and hoping for the same this year.    I've emailed them to ask to set a location aside for the Stageas for the show and shine - they are happy to do so if we can get them numbers, I'm happy to keep track of that. Entering as Nismo category.    I'll be road tripping up from Melbourne, would be cool to convey if people are interested, maybe there is SAU convoys from each capital?
