iv got an r33 with rb25t, 221kw at wheels. iv bought a oil catch can/tank believing it would make my car run more efficiant and give me better performance... it has an inlet and outlet of 6mm and holds approximatly 400ml.

Can anyone tell me if iv wasted my money or are they worth putting in? also is it big enough??? and what do you think of them?

cheers

6mm is pretty small, you dont want to restrict the breathing system, its designed for stockish power levels which you arent at. you could of course still use it, but i would think about getting some bigger nipples on it

EDIT: are you sure they are only 6 mm? you want something at least as big as the hoses on the rocker covers ideally

The part is titled well - the purpose it to catch oil from the engine. Usually not a problem unless you are on the track. Won't improve your performance but will keep you engine bay cleaner. Not a waste of money if you ever plan to take you car on a track.

for what sort of power im pushing out 221kw what is the recommended size i should use? is the 400ml compacity big enough?

yes it is 6mm i bought it not knowing what size inlet/outlet it had. silly i know

best is 500 to 1l with 15mm ports, plus it does help any engine that sees high revs every now again it doesnt just have to be track specific, that way you can see if it is breathing heavily or not. Plus this might get closed with "Been covered many times please use the search function" which is true but there ya go theres a start

new to this.

i will keep that in mind... thanks

just dont make anything smaller than it already is. have a look at the gtr breather hoses and see they are a lot bigger than the gtst from factory.

you dont need to change whats on your rocker covers, but try and keep the same or larger diameter through your catch can too. 400ml is not a lot, but your car probably wont spit a whole lot out so that should be fine. the catch can is there to stop the oil that is in the air in the cam covers from going into the intake, where it will go through to the cylinders and be burnt along with the air and petrol. oil in the intake can rob power if excessive, but more importantly can promote detonation, pinging, knocking etc its all the same to you it equals bad news. so you use a catch can to try and seperate the oil from the air (fill it with steel wool in a stocking etc. if you can open it). If it has a small filter venting to atmosphere, then it is a defect in nsw and will coat everything around it with a fine mist of oil unless you use it as an oil-air seperator (the steel wool idea).

if you use a smaller inlet/outlet pipe to the catch can than you have on the cam covers, at your power level you are risking increasing the crankcase pressure unnecessarily, which leads to dipsticks blowing out and cam cover gasket failure and a host of other problems if left unchecked.

keep everything sensibly sized and you will not have any problems.

just had a good read, that is an awesome thread. i feel sorry for the noobs at the end tho lol. mine is fully plumb back, so nice and legal (i hope)

i like the size of the inlets on the drift ones. thats what you really want, if only there was 3

newer drift ones I believe have three or at least two plus a plug you can use to vent to atmosphere or as a third fitting they are still small an sucky

best bet is to get one welded up or do yourself if u have the gear,n the skill got one welded up as I dont have a welder was cheapish and big so actually legal for drags etc.

will try n post pics when I get a chance was worth the stuff around I reckon

atmo FTW

excellent guys. you've been a great help. thanks

mine is "custom", about half the size of the stock windscreen wiper fluid dooby , its not pretty though lol. i will always plumb it back in, as that is just the law. i have a quick car but there is nothing i can really get done for. and i will try and keep it that way
