mate you might have an aftermarket fuel pump,.. i have a bosch 040 and it hisses nicely out the back of the car.. it starts to growl even louder when im almost out of fuel also.

and if you had an exhaust leak you would hear it.. it would sound very loud depending on the size of it.

Thanks for your reply but I have a standard pump, and my exhaust leak is only small.

are you certain the hissing is the fuel pump? My car had a hissing noise when one of the vacuum lines in the engine bay had a crack in it, same deal couldnt hear it inside but could outside

i'm 100% positive it's your exhaust leak... i had my exhaust leak sound like a hissy/ farting noise.. cant hear it when you rev but when you lower the revs you can.. Get the leak fixed and problem solved

seems to be coming from back of car near fuel tank, thanks for the suggestion though.

yeah i think you're right mate, i've got a new bracket to support the system now so it shouldn't vibrate/wobble loose now

either way a fuel pump is one of those consumables you need to change anyway (like a timing belt).
