As the title suggests, do many of you have a lot of smoke comming from your exhaust under full acceleration?

I was driving with my mate behind me and i redlined 2 gears and he said there was a lot of smoke comming out the back.

Now I know that this is expected as the engine will pump a lot of petrol so the car does not run lean, but what are your experiences? I have a 3" turboback system... I think my air filter (pod) is a bit dirty too, but oil is fresh and its more a black smoke and only happens under full throttle and when revved right out...

I use to get this too - my mechanic Nismo VIC said that it's the fuel pump, my Borsch puel pump and aftermarket ECU was pumping too much fuel and hence the vehicle built too much at high revs making it too rich. He got it tuned again and recommended that I only run Shell's V-Power fuel for a while. Did it for around 2 weeks, noticed that the smoke is more fine and less cloggy - moreover, performance is more responsive too.

I think you should get it tuned again plus run better fuel (if you are not already).

Good luck bro.

It can be anything. As Sambo33 said, black smoke is usually fuel. My 34 was perfect with factory nismo exhaust but as soon as I replaced it with Xforce exhaust (plus pod)....under full acceleration only black smoke gets produced. Anything after market will confuse the computer...with after market exhaust and pod more fuel is getting dumped to compensate for the power gain...so as a result more smoke. My 180, R33 and Rexie all did that as soon as I started changing things on them but never had any problem what so ever.

Well that makes sense, those are the EXACT same mods I have, (x-force exhaust & a pod)... and I really think it is running too rich like others have mentioned. I have never tuned the car in the first place, i put a boost gauge on purely for looks and it says my car is running 0.85 bar but it is stock bar the mods mentioned and it is not boosted!!

The only issue is that I have heard that getting a tune/dyno costs like $700??? That seems awfully expensive!

had that happen to me once - it was more like a puff of smoke......if its continuous then be worried

The smoke is petrol, there is so much cause the engine is receiving a lot of petrol... the engine is protecting itself if anything, so its not something to be worried about, but rather something to get fixed so it can run at its optimum.

yeah, those mods aren't gonna be pushin you to 12 pounds

I agree, plus my mate has the exact same car with same mods (except exhaust is nismo not x-force) plus his ecu has had remapping, and his car is just under 10 pounds, he has to boost his car to get to 12pounds which does make sense.

puffs of black smoke are cause by ur recirc or blow-off valve, basically its ur engine running very rich as the air recorded to go into ur chamber by the AFM is lost. thats a pretty basic run down, theres more to it but basically its not too much of an issue and is a common thing for stock tuned cars, and even tuned cars. if its white smoke ur looking at burning coolant meaning usually head gasket, if its grey ur looking at oil which can be from a number of things.

just free flowing exhaust i reckon did you actually bounce of the limiter or just get into the red area.... i was driving behind a vz ss the other day it oviously had a free flowing exhaust system on it sounded nice... he was just cruising along and dumped it back a few gears and bounced off the limter like 3 time he had a bit of black smoke coming out i think its just the norm.

$700 is too expensive. Even a aftermarket computer tune up shouldnt cost that much.

Ring up Adam from JEM (www.jem.com.au)

His pretty good, I've used him only once before when I first got my R34 (Workshops such as Pac, Pro Form etc use him)
