Consul Classic Estate

In perhaps the most radical conversion, Seventeen 2 door saloons were converted into estate form by Nairobi coach builders Cassini and Hughes for the Kenyan Police. Only the Estate shown below is known to survive and now resides in England.

And this is how Ford originally thought it should look, (clay model)

...as this super Golf dishes out a mammoth 650 horsepower and over 530 ft lbs of torque from the 6.0L biturbo W12 it's got mounted behind the front seats. All that juice flows through a 6-speed automatic to the rear wheels...

Not really a "wagon" but still pretty wacky!

sweet mother of god!

*rushes off to buy fist fulls of lotto tickets*

BMW have announced the spring (September in Europe) release date for the M5 Estate - and yes, it will be fitted with the same 507bhp V10 as the saloon *drools*

My dream car (Audi RS4 Avant) finally has some competition. :(

I can't believe I haven't mentioned this one before!

The wackiest of all wacky wagons! the..(drumroll please)

Lightburn Zeta Utility!

zeta_300_01.jpg

Probably one of the worst concieved ideas to ever come out of Australia (Adelaide actually) they were the brainchild of a bloke by the name of Harold Lightburn who owned a company that made whitegoods and decided to take on the big boys with his "second car" for aussies.

Despite the fact that the idea looked good on paper, the fibreglass bodies were dismal in build quality, the 2 stroke 2 cyl air cooled engine was woefully underpowered and don't get me started on the chaindrive setup to the rear wheels (I'm serious!!!)

To top it all off, even though it is shaped like a wagon, there was no rear access to the vehicle and to get anything in or out of the back, the front seats had to be removed because they couldn't be folded down! No wonder there were only about 360 of them made.

If you want a real giggle - google the Lightburn Zeta Sports! They only made 28 of those and the world is still glad they stopped when they did :)

    • I definitely agree with you there - I never click on content for cars I would never ever be able to get or compete with/against/be seen next to. Seeing a MX5 compete with a FD RX7 will make people upset though, for sure. Even in 2.5L Turbo form which is pretty grass roots. (or at least as grass roots as classic cars can be) Yes we're all classic car owners now.
    • Wonder what the cause is, but here's hoping it's nothing too serious.
    • People don't always want builds that are overly expensive, or have engineering/registration/insurance issues and head aches that come with them Whilst big dollar builds, and complicated stuff is interesting to watch, there is only a tiny % of people who would actually use this information, or have the spare finances to drop on said builds, whereas the buy a cheap(ish) cool car, and make it better, with a average budget, that the average Joe or Jane could achieve will always be a winner in my opinion
    • Bit of a thread revival, you mentioned wanting a bit more top end before, do you regret not going with the 1.01?
    • It's kind of interesting - They definitely do builds that split the difference between what they like and what will generate views and engagement. The NC Platform always surprises everyone in a good way, in an uncomfortably good way some may say. They could throw a LS in there and arguably have the best (and best performing) car of the entire stable. But that isn't necessarily what draws views, because people viewing don't want to accept the vegetables of a LS NC MX5 being a superior vehicle in every way (including fun) than a RB26 240Z. This is also why there's not a lot of content about the GR Yaris (on the web in general). They're too good, yet 'only a Yaris' The community doesn't want certain cars to be as good as they are - to beat their hero cars, and I believe the NC MX5 is absolutely one of those cars.
