Getting A Athlon 64 X2 Dual-core 4200+ Reve6(socket 939)

hi guys,

just need to ask a few questions.. i plan on getting a Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4200+ reVE6(Socket 939) processor for my computer.. im running an Asus A8N-E motherboard and i checked on the website and it says it supports the processor.. just wondering if i need to change any other stuffs? planning to do it on my own so it would be heaps cheaper.. wouldnt it? just for some added information im running on 1gb ddr2 rams and a geforce4 ti 256mb video card.. would those support the processor? and if i change the processor.. do i just swap it over wit the current one? or do i need to reformat my computer and go thru alotta hassle?

Should be plug and play, i heard that motherboard was not so great with the teh x2 though. Really you are only saving about $80 for a new one and increase your cahces its going to die, cuase in my experience they usually do.

Regardless of the mobo you are really just moving the bottle neck from the processor to the gfx card and ram, id say 2g is entry these days, well that said i only use my machine at home for games and vids

Oh and will you power supply handle it? the dual core will want more juice than teh current one. honestly i used to be an athlon fan but every man and his dog tells me core duo is the only way to go now.

less cost now= lower lifespan of machine.

im running the X2 4400+

on an asus a8n-sli deluxe

with 2gb ram

and a geforce 7800gtx

my mobo just died though and they dont make them anymore

ive gotta get one off ebay from america

when i first put mine all together it was really really unstable. always crashing and stuff.

turned out to be the motherboard drivers were clashing. so i upgraded all that.

if its got onboard sound, if its anything like mine, dont use it coz thats what was making it unstable

hmm.. i feel like bringing it to computer force for them to take a look at it.. and see wat methods i can use to make it faster.. im constantly gaming do u think its safer to do it tat way?

NVIDIA Geforce 6600 256mb..

tats about all i know... it cant even take cs source wit 28++ players... i was thinking if formatting my comp would help.. but i scanned for viruses and spyware and its all clean.. so im just wondering if its about time to upgrade..

If you havent done a format in a while 2 years or so, it would be about time. Make it nice and clean again. Try teh gfx card and ram first you can always use those in another machine of it doesnt help too much. it ake it ure current board has a pci-x slot? you will want that for teh gfx card, agp is old tech.

x1650s are cheap as chips ($1-200) these days and can handle most of your new games quite well. If you really want to go teh whole hog get a driectx10 card, teh newest stuff, will come in handy in about 12 months but not just yet, yes im wating for crysis.

Umm you won't be able to put ddr2 ram on your socket 939 motherboard.

I'm running a A64x2 4200+ s939 on an Asus SLi board with 2gb DDR-400 (2-3-2-5) ram and a pair of 7600GT's. Goes hard.

I would suggest getting a dx10 graphics card, something along the lines of an 8800GTS.

check with Alpha/computer force, i was about to spend some $$$ upgrading my 2.4gig pent 4, alpha told me its the gfx card on surely enough was right, clocked it to 2.59gig and the new nvidia graphics card is schweeeet as!!!

Don't go socket 939... They (AMD) are phasing them out of production, some motherboards and chips aren't even available anymore... Go with Socket AM2, I've just bought a computer from Austins and the chip and mobo combination were about $500 more or less... Pentium is expensive though, but even quick AMD stuff is rather cheap, even on the new socket...
