Nismo slave

Not sure if you are aware, but there are recommendations against using the Nismo slave cylinder with the super coppermix clutches. Can't speak from experience though, just saw that when I was shopping for a new clutch. Ended up ordering the regular OEM slave cylinder. Hasn't been fitted yet though.

For example on the rhdjapan listing in the specs:

Quote

- Do not use with a big operating cylinder, which may result in a misshift due to insufficient stroke volume.

Or on the nismodirect listing for the slave cylinder itself:

Quote

The Nismo Big Operating Slave Cylinder reduces pedal load when using a sports clutch, improves half-clutch operating characteristics, and provides proper clutch connection positioning.

...

This operating cylinder is only to be used on metal disc clutches, and is not meant to be used with the Nismo Super Coppermix clutch series.

I have ran a Nismo slave with a coppermix for a decade/35,000 kms with no problems.

You shouldn't if push slave - they have heaps less travel than the stocker 3/4" slave. Pull slaves seems to not be as affected as much - I have ran both pull versions behind multiplate xtreme clutches in my 33R without drama before changing to ATS carbons with push setups.

Nismo 13/16" slaves are supposed to be for single clutches generally because the HD singles have such high clamp load pressure plates, so it's really only so people with skinny Jap legs can have a lighter clutch with singles. I destroyed a brand new R3C using a Nismo push slave on my 32 years ago from reduced travel and just won't use them again as there is just no need for them.

I have run a Nismo slave for 15 years on multiple clutches exedy ,jim berry. str twin plate no problems .So maybe people are not setting up the master cylinder . only reason I'm changing this clutch is because its a 500hp clutch and for some reason its held but i know I'm pushing my luck.

Yeah nah - If you confirm you have full master cylinder stroke you can't do anything else at that end to improve the situation. If this area has never been stuffed around with the master stroke never needs to be adjusted as you already have full master stroke. The slave cylinder can only move as far as its full stroke length also, and this is achieved well before full stroke on the master happens.

End of the day the Nismo 13/16" slave always gives less travel than the stock 3/4" bore sized item. Whether this is a problem depends on the clutch being used and its release requirement - some need more movement than the Nismo slaves can provide.

So after reading BK's experience and going and speaking to the guys at just jap who sell lots of these and have two Targa Tasmania cars  set up with Nismo clutches and slaves for over 20 years in the race cars they have never had any problems and have never had any customers have these problems even the guy who sets up the cars have had  problems  it may be safe to say that this may be a rare problem or other issues  . So thanks for your input BK . seeing that i have had no problem  and Piggaz with his crazy setup has had no problem i think ill be fine. But will find out in the end.lets call it SAU myth busters for 2023,  With 29 years of modifying cars sometimes you just don't know .

I sense sarcasm here and a dig at me not knowing what Im talking about, but I am not new to this clutch and gearboxes in a GTR. As I said it depends on the specific clutch, not how "crazy" your setup is. It very might very well work with the Nismo twin, but to assume it will just work every setup because you, Paul or Just Jap have not had a problem with them yet is not correct. So not myth busted, they really don't have as much travel and proved it on comparison years ago. if you talk to a clutch expert like ACS they will never recommend you to go to a slave that has less travel than the factory design.

As mentioned I personally had this happen on an OS R3C circa 2009. Clutch was fine when new, then after a few passes and a bit of wear would not disengage clutch. Went through everything and landed squarely on the Nismo slave not providing travel as correct bearing carrier height and full master operation was later confirmed. Changed the slave rod at the track to a longer one just to see if I could get it to release at all - clutch started disengaging but it was too late to save the clutch after disasmbly. I didn't know this was a thing at the time but found out the hard way when ACS supplied me the ATS and ditched the Nismo.

The point I was originally making is the Nismo push slave has less travel - this is a fact. To me they also make 2/10th of stuff all difference in lightening the clutch - so why run one ?

Right, you stand over there and you stand over there.  Now stop fighting....

Leave your emotions at the door boys.  Let's keep this constructive.  Don't let ego's spoil a thread.

I've got a coppermix twin in one of my cars with a nismo slave, no issues. The caveat is that it runs a Tilton pedal box, not a stock pedal/master.

Has anyone played around with push rods, stoppers etc to get a better full travel pedal feel out of a Coppermix clutch?  Wouldn't a Nismo slave actually help that issue as it would move less fluid hence requiring a longer travel to fully disengage?

    • From there it is trickier. Ecutek seems to be one of those closed ecosystems where everyone password protects their tunes which means I either choose a tuner and can't change from them and can't make any changes myself for any reason, or I have to buy the tuning software (about $4k) and then get someone to tune from scratch (which is not simple with all the multi dimensional tables these days). Once you buy about 300 "flash points" per ECU you can get it tuned and add their "RaceROM" function which hacks extra functionality like launch control onto the ECU, and also makes extra data available for logging over CAN Not sure what I'll do there yet; I'm tempted to use one of the overseas shops that does billions of remote tunes of the platform instead of starting from scratch locally, a lot can be done online these days.
