Street Tyres On The Track

After a day at Wakefield, on the motorway home, this is what happened. Only one went but I'm obvioulsy not confident in the other three. Lesson learned

What were the tyre pressures? Have you at anytime ran them real low, say for drag racing? I have never seen a tyure let go in the sidewall like that. I damaged the sidewall of the tyre once when it kept losing pressure, but because of the stiff sidewall of the DO1J i didnt visuially notice. When i took it back to get the tyre re-fitted they gave me a new tyre as the tyre was internally damaged

They have always been run at manu recommended pressure though when they warmed up on the track perhaps I should have lets some out. Never been run low. They have about 3000K street usage, DECA, and one day on the track. Almost look like a retread that didn't bond. Happened pretty much in 10 seconds driving home after about a hour on the road.

Ive had the Fed 535's and Ive done about 3 track days (1 was very wet), 2 skid pan, 1 drift and 1 supersprint and they are only now starting to look at shagged!!

They do suck getting traction now in 1st but the 595's I thought will be great for street

that scares me a bit.

I do not think they are the best tyre. they are cheap but best left to commodores and taxi's

Nasty! I've done a day at eastern creek and a day or two at wakefield on a set of SS595s. No problems so far but i'll be keeping a very close eye on those sidewalls now..

Are you going to contact Federal about it? It would be interesting to see what they say, and you might get some replacements out of it :-)

i have used T1rs and advan ad07s on the track and drags.. nothing happened to mine.. ??

only ran 32-34 pressure on the tyres at the track.. whole day!!

I did plenty of track days on my Hankooks without issue. I actually used to pump them up harder for track days to keep the sidewall stiffer. And i know Rowdy32 on here uses the same Hankook street tyres on the track, and he flys!

Yeah I made the mistake of running standard streets at too low pressures once in my rex and the damage done was obvious for all to see. Presures need to up around 40 or higher on the track for tyres like this. Anything in the low 30's will kill them in no time. But we live and learn.

yeah i hate federals.... they have weak carcasses it is quite common when drifting for the whole tread to delaminate like a retread.....never see side wall damage like that though... from the pictures i reckon you got a puncture or a slow leak and it ran flat for some distance (wear pattern near tearing is the tell tale).

To put to rest all of your concerns...

I work for Federal tyres and I use these same tyres on my Skyline, it has 250kw at the wheels and has always been driven very hard on the street and the track, I have had 2 sets so far and I have never had an issue.

I have also put Federal 595 and 595RS on lots of my friends cars one of them is a drift car and one is a track car and they have never had a problem.

We also sponsor racers in the Drift Australia series and supply these tyres for their cars and we havent had any reports of unusual damage from them that I know of.

In mine and my collegues personal opinions what has happened here is the tyre has punctured on the highway and has been run for a short time while flat, the sidewall has been sheared in a complete circle from the rim cutting through it.

This will happen to any low profile non run flat tyre.

Federal tyres dont have "weak carcasses" they are built to very high standards and are a quality product that meets or exceeds UTQG (uniform tyre quality grading) ratings.

I feel that it is not fair to say that Federal's are a weak tyre or have weak sidewalls when this is clearly in our opinion an environmental hazard causing a puncture and the tyre being driven on while flat.

You are welcome to your own opinion but making statements about brands or manufacturers on these forums that could be classed as detrimental to the product is not such a good idea, there are many sponsors, retailers and workshops that take part in these forums that could see these kinds of statements as an insult or worse - defamation.

Please dont take this as any kind of personal stab or threat I am mearly making a point.

There are many drifters in the Drift Australia series using Federal tyres and are extremely happy with them.

We have been to visit many events and had nothing but great feedback, there are many who have said that they would love to get sponsorship from us for next year aswell.

What bullet32 said happened is also what the other Federal people said when I called and sent pictures. Federal was very professional and treated me very well. I struggle with the idea that a tyre would self destruct so badly if you got a flat and pulled off the road as soon as it became apparent, but I also have a limted experience with low profile tyres. If so, well thats life...

I would say I thought these were, especially for the money, great tyres. I'll buy another one to replace this one and keep running them on the street. Moving down the path of getting semi's for the track.
