When my clutch is out somethging is making a whining noise, but when clutch is in I think the whining noise goes away.

But when I put the clutch in when in neutral I get a rolling, tapping noise. I only ever get this noise in neutral

Anyone got any ideas, the whining noise is starting to shit me.

I think that the sound that you are hearing is from the clutch bearing. When you have the clutch in neutral the fingers of the clutch might be just scraping on the bearing. And when u push the clutch in, it (bearing) engages with the fingers n stops slipping on them.

I have a similar problem in my subaru. I put a new clutch in but i think i stuffed up by not putting enough grease on things. The clutch bearing seems to be still touching the fingers of the clutch when i have the car in neutral. I can;t seem to change it cos if i losen off the clutch cable i can't get enough throw to disengage it.

Don't take this as gospel. It is just my ideas.

Yep sounds like gearbox input shaft bearing, Unfortunately its a common problem in the skyline boxes.

Best way to diagnose is park car in shed/ garage, start car, gearbox in neautral and listen for

Grumbling bearing noise (sometimes whirring) Then press the clutch pedal in. If noise goes away it indicates the Input shaft bearing in the gearbox, if Noise still there its the throw-out bearing of the clutch. Hope this helps, Have found redline Shockproof oil works wonders in these boxes to. Should change gearbox oil at least every 40 000km.

I definetly got the whirring noise in neutral, is it real bad, get it fixed straight away?

It happen to mine about 10 months ago. A throw out bearing. The gearbox guy said it does no harm you just have to put up with the noise, to fix it is a major rebuild. He put some redline oil in it and told me to come back when the box shits itself from somthing else, away i went. And yeah the redline oil does not stop the noise, just better gear changes. :D

Hey I just started to have this happen to me, can anyone confirm this needs a major gearbox rebuild? How much damage is it doing? (Getting kind of paranoid cause of the GOR cruise in 2 freaking days)

I'm sure mine is the input shaft bearing too. Started making noise after a spirited drive, hilly stuff.

It only got rebuilt last year with new stuff, but it is take 2x stock HP.

Still annoying that it happened. Hasn't seemed to get worse though and doesn't make noise when coasting along or deccelerating, or when pushing in clutch sitting still.

in my experience its gonna be different for every gearbox i pulled mine apart recently and the counter shaft bearing in the carrier plate was farked but input shaft bearing was ok.

i had the same problems as everyone else though, mine just got really really loud so i swapped it
