my car is tuned for 100 octane but i want to run something with higher octane this saturday at the drag meet for extra protection.

i rang martini fuels in rowville and got quoted $145 plus GST for 20 litres of 110 octane fuel. this is rather expensive so i called moorabbin airport to see if they still sell to public like they used to back in the 90s when i was a regular buyer... the avgas is currently $2.35 per litre and with 106 octane seems much more economical.

they still do sell to public only if a cams passbook ( as he put it ) can be shown at the time of purchase... i assume this is what the track guys with cams licenses have???

just wondering if anyone is also interested in runing avgas and or can help me purchase some with the help of their cams passbook please...

i can take care of all the logistics if needed..

I wouldnt be using avcat/avgas.

Your better off using a correctly designed fuel if you want any piece of mind.

You'd only need to mix 10 litres of martini/sunoco to a 3/4 full tank if all you want is protection.

You could then save the stuff for another time @ Calder or whatever.

Or alternatively if you wanted more use out of the fuel and have a PowerFC, that can be easily sorted via some quick injector/ignition settings

I think the Sunoco was $120 for 20 litres, and is 104, unless prices have changes (VPW)

any reason why avgas no good??

i do have PFC but too much of a noob with it to play around with Benno's settings..

if you are confident and know what you are doing and wouldnt mind, it be great if you could fatten the curve with 110 octane mix 50/50 or like you said add to 3/4 of v-racing... if the gain is considerable i dont mind paying 145 for 20 litres, as long as you can put the settings back to what they were...

I thought a tankful here and there didn't really effect anything??? Thought about/tried using a toluene mix? Also food for thought the military spec avgas, I can't remember it's name of the top of my head but it's 140octane, they use it in some of the warbirds and the caribu's etc. where to get it though I dunno.....

thats what i thought too that one tankful wouldnt hurt..

anymore info on toulene mix.. where to buy, how much to mix, how much cost and how much does it boost the octane??

might do some search on toulene..

a couple of points. avgas is no longer 106. more like 102 or 103. also, a cams passbook is a special fuel permission book, not a cams licence. to get one you need (from the top of my head) a PC or NC licence, and a cams log booked car (to use the fuel in). the write in the book how much you buy etc to prevent abuse of the system.

edit: as ronin suggested elf LMS is a better option, and is unleaded, and does not require a licence and passbook to buy it.

Octane isn't the only measure of a fuel when you're after some protection for a track day. Some of the very high octane unleaded fuels will burn very rapidly compared to pump fuel and could result in a lean AFR. Motec's website has some very interesting fuel test data comparing avgas and v-power racing from shell.

If benno has set your tune with V power racing then don't touch it and race it with that fuel in the tank.

It will be fine.

I ran my car around sandown with his tune on vpower racing and the knock levels were fine all day.

Your engine has been tuned with the fuel characteristics of v power racing, don't go putting a higher octane rating fuel (even if it is unleaded) as this fuel will exhibit different burn characteristics etc

I agree with Beer Baron. I work at Moorabin Airport and can get some for you but you may aswell just run V racing at 100 octane because thats all avgas is. If you want to go faster you'd be better off just pullling the rear seats out and not worrying about the avgas. That about all you'll notice. Nothing. There used to be a few different types of avgas but 100 is all you can get these days easily/common.

Avgas is just wank that people think it gives them heaps more power but its just in their mind compared to 98 octane or v racing.

Avgas is not Shell V Power Racing. They are completely separate animals. If your car is tuned properly, don't worry about it.

Obviously their not the same but are the same octane rating. He doesn't run avgas in it at the moment so there is no need to run it and their not really completely separate animals.

    • Yes, a plan for non-action is always my first sort of plan! I'm happy to see what falls out of invision's update. I had been having some thoughts on what to do with this the other day and they all seem to have fled my memory, after various solar panel induced traumas, squeaking suspension sphericals, etc etc, over the last little bit. I'll try and recall what I had in mind and make sure that I put it into print in some form before the Alzheimer's strikes again.
    • The ability to have both a 5500 stall for launching, and a regular lockup for every other scenario is pretty sweet. Does it actually work well like that though in the real world? Would it hold up to track use and otherwise you'd never know you had a stall converter in it? If so, that's awesome
    • The thing is, once the content has been tagged we can chop and change the end result as much as we want. Its identifying the content in the first place that needs to be done regardless of the final outcome.
    • Sorry @GTSBoy I thought I'd replied here. There's a new BIG version of invision coming out soon, it might be worth waiting until that happens as it contains a lot of improved functionality for tags. My suggestion would be to add a top level page (not thread) with some info on it and then link to sub pages for various topics. We could even just start really simple with 2 or 3 pages underneath it. Those pages could just have a view (like a pre configured search result) of the tags we choose to put on it. We could have some background or an intro on each of these pages. My only issue is that while admins and mods can update the existing content to contain the tags we want, new posts can have whatever tags the author wants. That said, the reason our tags are so messy is because of that, so maybe we restrict tagging to admins/mods in edits.
