Hey Guys...

Well, I had my EPA test on thursday. I managed to get ahold of a Stock muffler, and had the rest of the exhaust made from there. The result? a ear piercing 82DB, with some emmissions thing at like 0.1 or something too. *shrugs*

It wasn't nearly as bad as I'd thought it'd be, I mean, I've read stories on forums about the EPA guys almost stripping the whole car out to check everything out. But yeah, I was in and out in like 10mins. Nothing said about non stock BOV (It was plumbed back though) and nothing said about air/fuel controller.

Once again thanks for the help, offers to borrow parts, and stories to calm my nerve's, it was much appreciated!

...Now I just gotta get my other exhaust back on ;-)

Cheers!

-Ross

Guest INASNT

the guys at the mcloud test station are good guys, i had no trouble when i went there either 10 mins and i was away! Cops r the only assholes not the epa inspectors, and from the quiet word i had with 1 of em they know some cops just report cars to the epa without knowing shit about what they are reporting.

EPA Testing station, Mcloud as INASNT said. And yeah they were pretty laid back guys, which made things feel a lot better for me.

And Whistla, if there's any parts or anything you need for wednesday let me know, I'll definitely help out if I can ;-)

Cheers!

im taking the majority of stuff out, including the ECU

the whole exhaust stays but im doing away with my cannon and putting the more sedate custom muffler i had made when i first had my exhaust done

its pretty quiet, hope it passes

i dont want to risk it, so im doing the whole thing properly

thanx for the offer, i may need to take it up if the exhaust noise doesnt pass

  • 2 weeks later...

who pays for the EPA check?

Do you get a fine, or do you have a fee that you have to pay to get the EPA check.

If you fail, i think you can get a fine and/or an extention to make the car comply, if it doesnt comply after 3 times, then you pay a big fine and pull the car off the road for good. Something like this anyway.

If the victim doesnt pay for the test, and the police decide to EPA everyone (seems to be the norm thesedays) then the epa could get stroppy over the costs of such epa test, and perhaps instruct only EPA those cars that are suspicious, not stock.

What happens if you get multiple EPA's but you pass them all? Can you perhaps consult the EPA and tell them to stop wasting your time? Really, its a little childish, getting requests every month or so when the car is perfectly sound (regardless if you return it back to stock or not).

A lawyer in a new monaro, when they were new, was pulled over by a cop and majorly 'defected'. The lawyer took it to court, sued the cop for a variety of things, such as, loss of work/production/time amongst other things and supplied his bill of a few grand to the cop. Laywer wins, cop station has whopping bill to pay due to the cops greedyness (the laywer probably sued the police admin, not the actual officer).

They have a gutless approach these days. Its all about the radio in the plates, and mail out the fine. Pathetic really.

For the turbo crowd, its just a matter of bolt on/off, but for the worked naturally aspirated people, such as V8s, the whole engine needs to be stripped and return to stock, especially if its running a higher compression through speicalised pistons or shaved heads, and perhaps a solid lifter valvetrain.

Did the EPA do a special proceedure with a microphone pickup on a tripod, at a certain distance away from the car, with a whole lot of other variables, or did htey just stand with a dB meter? I think there is a speical way they have to do it to test, to make sure hte experiment is the same as the standard experiment.

Also, did they have a book and went through your enigne bay, ensuring that your hoses are connected in the right place and so forth? They do take photos of non-standard items that they want changed, and refer to them if you dont pass the first time, or even if you do pass.

refer to my post in regards to the proceedure of how they tested the noise

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...25&pagenumber=2

as for knowing things in the engine bay, they seemed have known where to look for emission control devices and to see if their in working order

as for who pays? well EPA is government funded (so i belive and so i understand)

What happens if you get multiple EPA's but you pass them all?

This is what i want to know...its obvious that im going to put all my "epa defectable" items back on

But what happens if i get another notice in the mail?

Are my interactions with the EPA recorded againsts my registration? do i get a fine or registration withdrawn if it happens again?

Denham mantioned that the EPA guys said "they need photographic evidence" to call u in again..but how true is this?

My understanding is if i get caught again, i just make the car EPA safe again, pass the test and the cycle beings again

    • Actually,  just remembered there should be info in the threads (somewhere) about swapping to a manual steering rack and deleting power steering all together.
    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
