always go to a specialist if you possibly can.

You will always be better off going to a specialist than a mechanic. If there is a price difference it will be negilible and at least you know if there is a problem afterwards they will be able to take care of it themselves, not try and pass the buck on to a parts supplier etc

oh and .. if it ( the CV joint ) was on the front ?

if so its about 99% certain you will need to get a wheel alignment

even if it was at the rear I woudl check it out if I were you

eesh.. even THINKING of doing CV joints leave me cold

yea was front passenger side.

Actually replacing the boot wasn't that bad,

it was cleanin the grease out of my mags that was the most pain.

Yea we got a wheel alignment two days later drives much betta now..

Sorry to bring up an old topic but i had my CV boot go on the drivers side so i booked it into a CV specialist to have both sides done (boots only as i had the magna done without replacing the joints with no problems 300,000k).

He complained about it being a prick of a job as he needed to take the shafts out (Why i don't know) and after all that only did one so i have to take it back.

Q.

Do the shafts have to be taken out

If so how are they held in.

i dont know if they need to be removed to do the cv boots but i do know how the shafts come out.

both sides u need to take the top control arm off and steering rack arm and coilover off the strut, then u can lever the hub towards the outside of the car and that will allow enough room to get the spline from out of the brake hub (u gotta undo the big hub bolt first as its holding the shaft in and it will be bloody tight, best bet is a big socket set, i use a 3/4 inch set for this, or get a long breaker bar and it should do the trick).

the drivers side is held into the front diff by just a spline that is a tight fit, u need 2 levers close to the sump/diff and lever the axle out as u pull it outwards and it will pop out.

the passenger side is a flange to flange and 6 bolts need to be removed close to the sump and it will come off easy.

hope it makes sense and gives u an idea of the job

hey guys i have done a few cv,s alot of the time you can just use a stretch fit boot $25 easy as to fit. alot of the time the cv people only do the same as what us mechanics do. but say they serviced the cv. really there is nothing to service on a cv. if it is knocking you buy a replacement end which is held on by a circlip. really there is no diff between a cv specialist and what a mechanic does. as for is it a hard job not really should take no longer then 40 min a side to remove shalft and replace both inner and outer boots and refit .allow will take a bit longer to do at home with no air tools or hoist . well that my 2 cents anyway cheers bernard.

unique1 you can also get the front shafts out without removing the upper control arm, steering and shock - you can get enough space by disconnecting the sway bar and the lower control arm ball joint, you can then pull the hub backwards and out pretty easily as it pivots on the steering arm, shock and upper control arm.

interesting, thanks Duncan ive had the motor out a good 10 times and removing the front shaft on the drivers side is a pain in the arse and i might try your method next time (if there is a next time, i am hoping not, lol)

He has replaced the outer boot only on the drivers side as he did not know how to take the shaft out ($90)

Went back today to have the passenger side done he unbolted it at the sump replaced inner and outer ($110)

shame i haden'tgot on here earler i could have given him some information

I think he was confronted with something a bit out of the ordenary and didn't want to damage aney thing

    • Hi everyone! I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?

    • 100% accurate!  We are a pack of know it alls....  But, I bet people go to you when they have a problem! I've been on a bit of a clean up rampage too over the past month!  I've thrown more shit in the bin over the past 2 weeks than I have in the past 3 years combined! Anyway, it's all good fun being different! My wife sometimes does not agree!  
    • ADHD in all form isn't about "can focus, or can't focus" or is hyper active or isn't etc.   It's all a dysregulation. Either time feels to be stationary, or time just vanishes in a split second. We are either under focussed on the task at hand (as we're over focussed on our surroundings) or we have no idea an atomic bomb went off beside us as we're so hyper focussed and locked in on things.   Not to mention the rapid fire thought process. What it takes a "normal" process to think up a solution to a problem, ADHD will be able to give you 5 different ways to solve the problem, and the pros and cons of each. While we can be highly impulsive and lack the ability to "control ourselves" we can also become paralysed with the inability to make a decision for ourselves. While most of us have an OCD like requirement for perfection, we lack the ability often to remain focussed to get things to a perfect state. Those with undiagnosed ADHD as adults, can often find the last part actually stops them ever attempting to do things that they have the ability to do, as the reasoning is often "if I can't do it perfectly, it's not worth doing"   As for projects... Ha ha ha, I still need to take the other half of my wall trim down in the Fiance's office so I can paint it. Need to finish digging and running the back yard drains, my R33, getting the Ninja bike registered (now being sold), the moped project, fixing either of the lawn mowers so they're reliable, along with a myriad of other things.   It's why I've been going through lately and just being brutal and clearing projects off that I won't actually ever complete. IE, moped will go to the tip, or be given away, bike is being sold, Subaru project being sold, some parts for other projects given away. Or I've been making myself focus on one thing at a time, by ticking off the smallest quickest ones first.   There's also a reason by our mid twenties we seem to be "know it alls", as we've all been down some of the weirdest and oddest rabbit holes when you follow the dopamine trail. It's often also why we're more a jack of all trades, but not a master of one.   However, pretty much all of my hobby projects, in one way or another, all come back around to automotive. That's my zen area.
    • Remember reading about this not too long ago. been for sale for a long time  this is like when the wife says you need to sell the car so you put it up for a ridiculous price no one will pay
