sup ppls,

I've had my 96 r33 gtst for about a month and suddenly last week been hammered with a problems. Need some help from some guru's around here.

1) boost: the car came with a turbosmart twist type boost controller, took it off cause it spiked ridiculously, at low boost it sits a 6-7psi, once I drop down to second gear and give it some beans, the boost gauge shoots up to the original 10psi, but not always only when I try to redline it. Is this normal?

2) transmission: This is starting to worry me, trying to get into gears is hard, feels like the gear linkages aren’t aligned properly, sometimes I need to force the gear in. Another problem is when I change from 5 to 4, it makes a very alarming sound, like when you try to get in gear without enough clutch in, that grinding sound.

3) engine: An extremely loud knocking sound has arisen from the cam cover or around that area when I start the car and when I throttle it to 1500rpm, it is the loudest at that point, it just keeps "knocking" like something's loose or hitting something.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

thanks randy, Timing belt eh...I'll give that a look

You can only hear it when I start the car in the morning, and when I hold it at 1500rpm...anything above that, there's no sound...no idea.

Boost, I'm still confused and the stiff gearing, still have no idea

Well... it'd be good to check the contents of your gearbox oil when you drain it. (looking for metal flakes or shards). If it's worn synchro's, it's worn synchros and you can only change them (probably quite expensive.. it's gearbox out and in, plus parts)

Timing belt i'm still betting on, but the boost lost me. Might want to take pics of your current setup and/or mention what the current setup is. I'm guessing you went back to the stock controller? If so, it gives 5psi under 4500rpm, and 7psi over that. If it's going to 10psi, then you've got some mad boost-spike problem. Either it's excessively long boost controller piping or something else strange.

Get it short, and get the turbotech (or whatever) cheap manual boost controller to test this out. I run one on 10psi, and it doesn't spike one bit!

Is the sound kinda like a " DUDUDUDUDUDUUDUDUD" sound?

Mine had that about the same RPMS and it was the timing belt that needed changing.

Oh and R33 gear boxes have become notorious for being f**cked and being crunchy. learn to live with a shitty gear box unless you want to spend big $$ either for a brand new box or getting it rebuilt.

Cheers :D

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey Derek! Thats my old car mang.. sorry to hear ur havin issues with it! The gear box probably could do with an oil change, and maybe clutch too dude. Try double clutching into gears and see if it still crunches, if it doesnt, its most likey syncros.

As for the engine, i got no idea what that noise is. A loose timing belt will make that noise, but i had the belts changed not long before selling the car.

If you got any other issues man, u've got my number!

A.

PS. if you ever decide to sell that car let me know first! I miss it.

    • Interesting, I've heard complete opposite on my end. Bit of a lottery I guess.
    • Getting Dangerously close to being ready to go back in the car. Rockers in with clearance castings now (and a quick check with the USA for the torque settings for the larger custom bolts) Covers and ported FAST Manifold sitting on there. Not fully tightened down as there's some clearancing required for the water pump with the earlier LS1 water pump styles. Example of the clearancing needing to be done: The body has to be ground a little but I'm struggling finding an actual piece of it. The later variant of water pump resolves the issue as the manifold was designed around it. It only came on the VZ LS1 in Australia, it got a different pulley for Gen4 motors. (it also costs $450... vs... $0).

    • Doing some height adjustment on front suspension on a v35 and noticed this. The passenger side looks correct. So wondering what's happened to the drivers side?
    • Oh...I have the electric mirrors as well iirc ...they're in the same state as just about every other R31 door mirrors, with the 3 plastic screw towers broken/cracked in the plastic molding. All the interior is 'dry', so the mirror switches etc likely all work fine. Some pics below of the trimmer pieces ~ looks to me like previous owner, painted chrome finished trims with black paint ...ergo, the chrome underneath is likely a-ok... ...starts to look yukky posting stuff like this, how much did it cost in fuel on your last sortie up this way?...me just thinking aloud, borrow someone else's 4cyl to cut costs, come do your own pick'n'pull like before to save me some bother...hehe.. but whatever, I'll just earmark bits I know you want, because the way this is all panning out, I'll be able to retire the R31 from daily duty at long last, replacing it with a Subaru wagon I'm lining up in the wings...ergo, my attitude towards the donor pinny shell is starting to wane a bit, and I'm more than happy to help you out there... Like you say though, no rush...and I'll guarantee we won't be moving too far from this locale at any rate 😎
