hey guys

got into the car yesterday and started driving and decided to turn lights on as it was getting dark and lights turned on fine except the lights for the gauge cluster didnt come on. Headlights, park lights and dash lights came on except the gauge stayed off. the gauge cluster itself works...speedo, tacho fuel and indicators all work. I tried checking all fuses, connections, changed the led's and also swapped cluster with a mates one and even with his it all works except the lights for it.

anyone have any ideas? i need to drive car tonight and its kinda hard driving looking at the little display on the powerfc handcontroller saying speed and revs haha.

any help would be great as i'm stuck

i dont own a 33, but check your fuses man. could be a simple as that. that means pull every one of them out to see if there is any broken.

yeh i tried that and all were sweet. i tried the ones inside the car next to steering wheel. are there any others i need to check?

does it have a rheostat to adjust the brightness of the dash lights?

if it doesn't, you might have to rip the cluster out and have a look/test.

yeh it does have the little thingy to control it. after you said that i quickly ran out to the car to make sure that the brightness wasnt turned off and hence the lights not on haha....it was set to max...lol.

yeh what sorta test can you do/what to look for?

is it a manual scroll type knob for the rheostat or a push button up/down.

if its just a rheostat type, just bridge the wires or earth it out, but if its push button/module type it ain't that easy.

not familiar with the vehicle, so i can't really say with any more detail.

typically however the brightness controls, control the earth side of the instrument lights, if that helps at all...

i had to go out and got back and had a good look at the car and managed to sort out the problem...one of the wires for the plug into the gauge cluster has split. when i was driving the indicators didnt work so i assumed that it was to do with the cluster but now with the cluster sorted the indicators still don't work. i can turn lights on and off and high and low beam but the indicator itself doesn't work which is weird as the lights are on the same stalk.

anyone have ideas on how to sort this problem out? haha

    • I hope one day I can do it like you. Your engine looks great.
    • If there's nothing else I can do I'll probably do something like that Someone on the internet said that ca20s and ca18 engine blocks are the same and that you can use a ca20 engine block and put ca18det parts to make a ca20det Do you think this is possible or will it damage the engine?
    • Yeah, I did some research and found out that some things are different.
    • Makes sense, thanks! Consider me very impressed. And I very much appreciate the effort in documentating all of it. You'd be surprised, or maybe not, how many people this reaches who search for things online. Anyways, I shall continue to read all of it, understand maybe a quarter, and hope that some of it sticks if I ever end up in a situation where it's relevant
    • 'Did' work on them is more accurate ~ on the R31 Skyline forum, you can spot me as 'Solder'... I've written quite a bit about the 4R01 boxes there, and I ended up reverse-engineering the older TCU type operations, so we could fudge a custom TCU to pull off other tricks...and like all things, when you do it a lot, see the failure patterns, have to find parts etc etc, your head ends up filled with whys and wherefores... there was a reason Nissan went with these in more than 60models over 16+ years... all in all, the JR401E based design is an interesting study, as Nissan changed things over the years in a never ending battle against them lunching on themselves <grin>...by the time the RE4R01A rev.C came out (often referred to as RE4R01B), they'd more or less perfected the design...
