hey guys, just bought my first turbo car which is a R32 gts-t and have some general knowledge about it but would like to know what are some good basic mods i can do to get the hp up. Not looking for huge amounts of power just yet but would like something around 250rwhp for now. Had it dyno'd a few weeks back at Hyperdrive in Malaga, good shop btw  and it made 190rwhp on 9-10psi which i have had turned up to run 13psi on high boost setting which is making 208rwhp.

The mods it has now are:

cat back exhaust, which im planning on finishing soon.

K&N air filter.

larger fuel pump and tank.

Frount mount intercooler.

Heavy duty button clutch.

Profec B boost controller.

Greddy Type R/S BOV.

So as you can see its pretty stock and would appreciate any feedback.

Oh, will try and get pics up ASAP

well firstly welcome to the world of skylines and to the forum :O

basically the next thing you should be doing is finishing off the exhaust, should reduce restriction and hopefully gain some hp there,

im guessing after that you should be looking at a type piggyback ecu or depending on your budget a standalone system (good luck finding a power fc )

one main thing to remember on these forums is to use the search function, which you will find to answer a few of your questions.

sam :D

Yeah lots of people with RB20s seem to think the rb25 turbo makes a great difference.. wont cost too much either. Quite often people on here are selling them for $200 - $400ish. While you putting that on get the front/dump pipe done to finish your exhaust off :D

My cooler was $550(DIY) from autoworx.. its about 76mm wide and didn't need to cut the 400R front bar.

Alright cool. I just found the exact same fm for $450 brand new so I might get it from there. Cant beat Paul for service though and knowing his skylines! (almost bought a car from his but didnt). Where abouts did you grab your 400R front bar from, and what price roughly? If ya dont mind me asking.

My car came with the 400R front, just fitted the matching 400R side skirts from mitchy's wreck.. rear bar OR maybe just pods are up next. I did see a full 400R kit on ebay, can't remember how much it was but I dunno if I would trust something from ebay to come to me without something being dodgy or it gets broken..

hey guys, thanks for the feedback. Now have a good idea of what is needed. The RB25 turbo i have also heard seems to run fairly well on the RB20, anyways finally got a chance to take some pics of the car for you guys to see :D. For some reason the pics seem to take for ever to upload onto this post so i have stored them in my gallery. Not sure if i need to add a link here somehow or if you guys can just look me up as a member and see the gallery that way

if i were you i would go for something bigger than the rb25 turbo.

if you go to the effort to change the turbo, may as well put something decent on :(

and 250rwhp will be pushing the thing

Effort? it took 2hrs to do my swap and it was a direct swap, the only other thing that would be as easy to do is to buy the rb25 turbo and get it hiflowed before putting it on.

direct swap? doesnt the oil feed banjo bolt on the 20 lines have a bigger hole? or did you use the 25 lines?

why are you asking about a front mount intercooler when the pictures already show one??? i'm confused

I have heard this too but maybe I just got lucky, everything was a direct swap - I have a series 1 RB25 turbo with the steel compressor wheel so that could be why. Straight swap, easy as coz we did it at my mates workshop and he's pretty cluey with RB motors. The hardest part was wiggling the old turbo out and the new turbo in ;)

    • This isn't for lotsa powers, and time and effort isn't even a thing I'm concerned about The whole reason is "Just because fun", and "Just because fun" is what I do And whilst there are other kits, with better and more modern turbos (Rev9 use the same Kraken manifold I believe), where in Sydney can I do a drive in drive out with the after sales support that MX5 Mania give My Turbo 86 made around 200kwatw on a AVO turbo kit, and was over 100kg heavier than the MX5, but it was a blast to drive around the streets, until I crashed it.....DOOH, so somewhere around 200 ish level and some whooshy noises and I'll be happy driving to work, the shops, or heading into the country with Jackie for Devonshire tea So, thanks Dose for your info, it sounds like a 0.64 will be fine for what I'm after👍 The only real racing I do nowadays is to the toilet
    • Hey @Butters, did you end up getting this clutch in ? I have just ordered to a uniclutch track to go in my getrag 6 speed that’s in my BNR 32
    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
    • This came quicker than I thought. It ain't even 2025 yet.
