Hi All

After a daring manoeuvre to avoid a stack today I have found that my stag seems to hesitate under load at approx 5000RPM for a short time then after say 500rpm it climbs to redline normally.

There seems to be a continuous popping from the exhaust a bit like hitting the rev limiter??

Any ideas??

I first thought I was low on fuel and it was starving but have 1/2 tank....

Possible that it’s missing or plugs are rooted??

Any help appreciated

g'day mate, iv got the Exact same problem and there has already been about 3 topics made in the last month about this problem

the conclusion that these topics come to is (generally) that its the coils

so in saying that there are 2 options to fix it, either buy new coils (standard, splitfires etc) or wrap your coils up in electrical tape or heat shrink

apparently what happens is that tiny cracks start to occur in the coil pack casing which results in them earthing out onto/around the engine covers at high load...

i haven’t done anything to fix it yet, but im hoping to buy splitfires soon to fix it

replacing the plugs wouldn’t hurt either.. hope this helps :)

Get some new plugs;

BCPR6E

They are a 0.8mm pregapped, copper, v-groove plug. They are fine up to slightly over 300rwkw odd.

$2.80 each, so under $20 for a complete new set.

For coils, go to a hardware store and get Selleys Industrial Strength 401 high heat temp silicone, and squirt it all around the casings of the coil packs. Let it dry and reinstall. Should stop any arc. This silicone costs $15, and a silicone gun cost me $2 ;)

just passing on info Ive received from this very website (SAU)

Cubes gave me the plug details, and found the coil pack info somewhere around here.

For the plugs, I live in SA and got them through MotorTraders.

They are NGK brand BCPR6E. Places like Autobarn, Repco, SuperCheapAuto, etc etc would be able to get them for you.

$2.80 ish each is the going rate, so if they say $5 let me know and I can scan/email a copy of my receipt.

They are very good plugs. I will never go 'platinum' so to speak, waste of $ compaerd to these, in the long run.

How is it that everyone recommmends to replace the coilpacks with "Splitfire" C/Packs,

but no-one ever recommends the "Splitfire" Spark Plugs as well??

Has anyone out there used the "Splitfire" special split electrode plugs?

judging by what Ian is saying...seems odd that the coilpacks will act up at 5000rpm and then stabilise again above that...i would think that it would get progressively worse as the rpm climbs and the boost builds up??

but i would definately try the new plugs and silicone...even if it isnt the problem....doesnt hurt to have done the job...after all its only a matter of time before the coil packs act up.

as for the dip at 4000-5000rpm...was told by a tuner that this is a common problem in rb engines and that a safc with decent tune will do the trick

Alrighty, Supercheap said 50 bucks for a pack of 10 (Since they were bringing them in for me I needed to buy the whole pack), Autobarn said try Repco, Repco had 3 in stock and it would take 10 days for the other 3 to come in.

JShop said they would have them in by 2pm today, for under $3 per plug. (repco charged 4.20 and obviously Supercheap charged 5) Unluckily for Ian he's not in Perth =\

But hopefully I'll be a happy guy later today.

Brendan your the man .... have already got a set of the plugs sitting at home since my last service as supercheap had 12 in stock ..... will get the silicone this week and do a full service.....

i thought the same but will be the silicone/ plug trick before freaking out...

the dip in power is defrinately common problem but is definately not this that is affecting my stag.... although a tune would be nice too....

I had the exact same problem. I found out I was still running the original plugs. Changed for the coppers, no probs since. Of course it had to happen on the night i went to the drags, just before I got there!!!

oh well 15.4 with a misfire still wasnt' bad, but I gave up after 2 runs.

Change the plugs........ I'm sure that'll do it.

Thats it, plus its a cheap 1st-off thing to do/check (plugs and coil pack silicone).

If it still doesnt feel right, Id suggest, if you dont already have them, getting a Nismo Fuel Pressure Regulator and a SAFC and get a tune done, nice and fresh. The FPR will be important around the 4500-5500rpm mark along with the safc. Obviously a more expensive option, but once on the car you wont be looking back.

Other then that, Id be using brake cleaner (contact clean) on the AFM, squirt it out big time and clean her up a bit, maybe clean or replace the airfilter while you are at it. Sounds like a fuel / air thing,,, but you never know, could be that the timing is slightly out. 1 dyno run might help diagnose any issue you may have..........

Umm, as for knee(s), cheers lol, read the wasteland to hear what I did (accident) yesterday. ouchies. black and blue today :rolleyes: doh.

    • I don't really know general street pads too well, but there is no reason you can't get a low dust, long wearing, no squeal pad that works for those calipers at a reasonable price....they would just be a low end to medium price daily style pad.  If new pads don't have much bite or they loose it over time, it is probably just the pad glazing up which you can fix by giving them a good thrashing every now and then (or get the mechanic to deglaze them at next service) Track or semi track pads are where you have to put up with excessive dust (and potentially squealing as a side effect of that) in return for good bite and performance when very hot. Street pads have nothing like that sort of punishment, even long downhills with the brakes on are easier than a track session
    • lol yeah I'll check that, reminds me of the LDV thread!  I don't think that is the problem here, the starter doesn't even solenoid click. I did do a super quick test by removing the starter motor's power cable from the engine bay fuse box and the battery voltage was still 10v, so something super fishy is going on. BTW here is a R33 fuse box table I threw together from a few sources....use at own risk! R33 Fuse Box and Sources.xlsx

    • Result of another R35GTR build. Similar specs as above except this is running our bigger size SS-2 profile option. Made similar power except this car runs on Pump 98 fuel. Build specs are: Nissan R35 GTR 2015 model stock engine and box. ETS street intercooler boost logi intercooler piping with tial bov, boost logi turbo inlet pipe ID 1050 injector DW 300C fuel pump Decatted oem down pipe and y pipe& HKS exaust 3inch intake pipe Upgraded actautors HyperGear SS-2 high flow option Final result is 639whp / 477wkws hubs, Ron 93 / P98 fuel at 20psi.
