Hey guys, Been having this problem for about a month now.. Got an R33 GTS-t with a GCG highflow and all supporting mods including injectors, z32 afm etc..

Had the car tuned about a month ago and couldn't boost the car over 14psi without the AFM spiking from roughly 4.5V to 5V and making the car basically cut off. This cut happens at around 5000rpm at boost levels from 15 - 18psi. The car suddenly just dies and drops about 1500rpm, and looking at the data logging on the E-manage the AFM voltage spikes up to 5v.

I thought this was due to a dodgy AFM so i sent it off and got it replaced under warranty. The new AFM is now on the car and its back on the dyno at the moment doing the exact same thing.

All boost cuts have been disabled on the E-manage, and tried changing the AFM values to read 4V continuously. One thing i'm thinking it could be is the stock computer cutting ignition due to excessive knock levels? Not too sure but i think the stock ECU has a knock cut built into it, which the E-manage won't over-ride? Any suggestions would be appreciated as the car is still at the tuners so we can try everything on Monday. Cheers, Shane.

You have pushed the AFM values to Boost cut.On your Air flow map have you gone + or -? You may have to Up the Fuel pressure and come back on the AFM map making the factory ECU see a lower voltage then use Ign and fuel maps to fine tune.

Or better still go for an aftermarket ECU.

the AFM spiking from roughly 4.5V to 5V

The standard ECU is seeing too rapid a change in AFM voltages, you need to be more careful in your tuning of the EManage. During boost build you will have to compromise on the A/F ratios if you are opnly tuning via AFM voltage. This is not unusual, don't feel dissadvantaged, it's the same with all AFM voltage benders. I assume you will be tuning via the EManage control of the injectors after you cure this problem.

 cheers :P

sounds like what mines doing only mine is set on 12psi

no doubt it may be maxing my standard AFM and causing this cutting out at high revs

I thought my tuner may have been able to work around this little problem but he couldnt

its driving me mad at the moment

damn these auto GTT's wish there was an ECU that was as hassle free as the Power FC

yeah, we got it all working good on the dyno running 18psi. But on the road when loading the motor in 3rd or 4th up a hill it still cuts out. Gonna have to leave it like this for a while as got no more money to spend on it.

Another problem I'm having is at low revs and low Throttle % the injectors spike up to 99% duty for about a millisecond, can do it maybe 3 - 7 time in a row, This is causing the car to stutter and pop when cruising along and back fire when rolling to a stop.

In hindsight i really should have just gone for a stand alone, but hey, what can ya do.

That happens when you don't use a high enough ramp rate on the dyno.

Tuner's warranty?

I have heard of that before, it may be an EManage bug. But you should check the plus wiring anyway, just in case.

Unfortunately not much choice for autos.

 cheers :(

if it was an r33 i would say search the net for a remapped ecu. that will not have rich and retard anymore so you can just tune it like a stand alone.

is it the emanage blue or ultimate? if it is the ultimate you could try getting the map sensor for the emanage and disconnecting the afm.

i was under the impression that as the emanages are piggybacks, you cannot remove the afm by using a map sensor. the map sensor just allows you map beyond the AFM's max readings

No, we've got the double whammy of AFM voltage cut, and the annoying boost sensor on the firewall that shits at 4.8v...best way around is a Z32 + FCD or bleed valve on the sensor.

you can remove the afm. you datalog the voltages of the afm and then use the airflow output map rather than the airflow adjustment map, then just adjust your fuel and timing in their individual adjustment maps.

yeah it looks like you need to set your boost cut more carefully, is it the blue version? if it is the ultimate do NOT make any fule mixture adjustments in the AIR FLOW MAP use the INJECTOR MAP ONLY. With the blue it is best to only subtract in the afm table and do the additional in the injector map.

Thanks for the input guys, But i've decided to sell it and have allready brought a PowerFC to take its place. I'm sure the unit is capable but i want to use an ECU that my tuner is more familiar with and just generally more information on. Anyone want to buy an E-manage Ultimate and harness for $550? Cheers, Shane,

WTF?? it was an ultimate and they could not sort it???? maybe look for another tuner.... the ultimate will do that setup a piece of piss.

what is the board code? (inside on the board, bottom right corner near loom plug) if it is a (E) i will buy it, i have a 33 to do on fri so it will save me pin swapping :P

Yeah it has an (E) down the bottom.

Over the past month my car has been in and out of the workshop, i spent all up about $1000 for 2 tunes. The first was at 14psi due to him not being able to overcome the boost cut, thought it was a faulty afm so i got it swapped for a new one.

Back in the shop for a second tune with higher boost, still doing the cut. He finally works a way around the cut and tunes it to 18-19psi, ok all good. I take it out for a drive, and the car stutters like crazy on light throttle, and is still hitting the cut when loading in 3rd or 4th up a hill.

So i go back again, they take the car for a drive, come back and say, hmmm we cant fix your car. they show me the data log of the injectors spiking to 99% at low throttle, and didn't mention the cut.

This Saturday i went for a drive with a mate, and it hit the cut a number of times and was stuttering and backfiring. i then thought to myself... f**k it, Im pulling it out and getting a pfc.

well thats the story, the E-manage is yours for $550 if you want it. Cheers, shane.

no worries, i will take it. where are you located? can you pm workshop to me. i will keep it confidential. i just need a list of confident ultimate tuners and a list that could do with some training. I am currentley looking at bringing the TRUST engineers over for a training workshop much like the MOTEC ones. I am overwhelmed by the enquireies atm and cannot do my own work due to the amount of emanage enquiries. emanage sales in aus have quadrupled in the past month and ive been left holding the tech support bag.....

    • You know, that is exactly the thing that I was thinking a coupe of hours ago. I even had a plan for a meme, involving one big one, another big one, and the Old El Paso girl saying "¿por que no los dos?"
    • NoS, 2 of the big ones.
    • Oh, that's grim. Something bad has been happening there.
    • Put an endoscope down the hole and saw this. Not quite all around the bore but a good 60% at least. Chin to the chest and towards further disappointments I guess.
    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣
