You shouldn't have any trouble with the FM band, that's the same as far as I've seen.

The AM band wont work though, they have a 10kHz spacing between tuning points, we have 9kHz. Depends on what you want to listen to I guess!

Some digital stereos can be reprogrammed to suit the different specifications, not sure which ones (but generally high-end).

the biggest problem with buying headunits from America is the importing. You MUST check if the buyer will ship to Australia (use air freight or you will be waiting over a month.)

Also if there is a problem with the headunit, chances are no company in Australia will cover it with warrenty and you might have to sent it back to the US.

Also watch out for the importing taxes and charges. Apart from that only the AM band is effected :)
