sorry matey, but that's incorrect.

r33 turbo = ball bearing.

The sI turbos had a metal compressor wheel.

SII turbos have a bakelite compressor wheel for faster spool

both have ceramic turbines - the limiting factor. Once boost is increased too much, the rear wheel pops.

some r34s had the same turbos as r33s.

The rest have the same turbo but a larger exhaust housing like the vg30 turbo.

I have a large housing avaialble if you need it.

  • 3 months later...

If the R34 and VG30 have the same exhaust housing does this mean they will perform much the same?

I have a VG30 on my RB20DET and wanted to go to something less laggy. I am ready to buy a R34GTt turbo, though it is clearly not worth my while if there is no difference between the two.

Your thoughts?

I just bought an R33 Series 2 turbo for my RB20, I was after a 34 one but they are too hard to find and overpriced. But if there's f*ckall diff then i'm glad i've gone the 33 S2. Would putting the larger 34 housing on it be a bad idea and make it more laggy on the RB20?

KeyMaker,

Are you saying that a R34 GTt turbo would be more laggy than a VG30 turbo or more laggy than an R33 GTSt turbo?

The benefit of the R34 turbo over the R33 is not that it is more power, rather, that it is newer.

Yes its based on the exhaust housing....primarily.

R34 turbo should be less laggy than a VG30 turbo due to the use of a nylon/plastic impeller. I'm not sure on the specs of a VG30 turbo or what impeller it uses so i'm assuming its a steel impeller. So therefore the R34 turbo has a lighter rotational mass to turn = less lag.

But the R34 turbo shares the same exhaust housing as the VG30 turbo.

If I were you, I'd get a R33 S2 Turbo if you want to reduce lag & and you'll still get the same power, as the compressor housing on the 33 is the same as a 34 turbo and you won't be able to run any more boost than a 34 turbo.

Just on topic..

R33 turbo is laggier and will have less responce than a R34 series one turbo .. R34 series 1 turbo spools much quicker and with the right mods can be full boost a 3g and less.

R34 turbo series 2, is bigger and can run a higher boost level, still spoools quick but not as fast as a series1 .. Ideal for a high flow.

I only know this because ill be doing exactly that for my 34
