I want to put a sr20de (+t) later on

first of all

does anyone know exact weights between the sr20 alloy block and the rb20 iron block?I had initially wanted to use a sr20de s13 as a track car, but now am looking at skylines.

the sr20de powered s13 with manual transmission weighs in at 1110kg

the rb20de powered r32 with manual transmission weighs in at 1210kg

so if the iron block rb20 engine weights atleast 100kg more than the sr20 alloy block

then I should be fine in terms of weight. weight distribution for the sr powered r32 would be better as well.

does anyone have a guide, for the part ill need for a sr20 swap into an already manual r32 skyline?

i know meggala has done this before, but i need further technical details.

so yeah. what are the weights of the rb20 and the sr20

and what are the parts things i need to have for the swap?

Cheers

Im pretty sure there isnt 100 kg between the two, being that an rb20 short motor only weighs about 100 kg. Usually the conversion is done in conjunction with moving the motor back, this along with the shorter motor move a lot of weight off the front axle. It also allows you to move the rediator/intercooler back as well. Just hope your ready to modify the firewall if you wish to make the most of the transplant. One r32 i saw in japan with an sr20 stroker had the waerpump inline with the base of the windscreen.

An RB20 couldnt possibly weigh 300kgs. Maybe with turbo, gearbox etc all hooked up it might get close. I moved an RB26 block with the help of a friend, and one person can easily lift the head. So im guessing the RB20 weighs about 160kgs ?!?!?!? I have heard that the SR20 is actually the same weight as the CA18?!?!?! Perhaps the SR20 is still a heavy thing iwth its steel liners etc etc

The SR20 is heavier than the CA18.

I havent personally weighed them, I remember a thread on HybridZ, I believe, that said the weights of certain motors.. The CA18 is physically smaller, which I believe makes up for the heavier Iron used in the block.

"Often referred to as the four cylindered RB engine"

"Due to superior head design (cam on bucket, as opposed to the flawed complex and heavy rocker arm actuation of later motors like the SR and QR), many enthusists consider the CA18DET to be the best engine platform since the FJ20ET that powered the legendary DR30 Skyline DOHC-RS."

Why an SR lol...

hehe

thanks for all the suggestions!

but I'd really like to know about the weight differences between the sr20 and the rb20, if anyone has the figures.

sure I've thought about using a lighter chassis like an escort, but to be honest, I want to race a car which i like and like working on, so I've chosen the skyline.

also working to a budget here and skyline shells are cheap as chips and so are sr20de engines. (nz)

1600-2000cc class is quite easy , its called Mazda MX5 . 50 50 weight distribution and suspension better than a lot of things of the box . Huge following in the US so just about everything out there for them . They call them Mazda Miata over there and theres about a fortnights reading at their various sites . Given a choice the slightly later BP18 powered car is the pic .

Sold here and really clean examples dot the countryside .

Only 2 seats but perfect for a club racer without lots of lard , cheers A .

best idea is to ring a wrecker and ask them. they will have a pretty good idea. from my experience I would say the RB20 is about 20-30kg heavier than an SR, but not more than that.

The SR20 is heavier than the CA18.

Nah sorry i build a few CA's and alot of Sr's. I dropped the latest CA build to Drift garage/UPgarage in nsw last week and i cannot lift the 'long' CA at all.... the SR on the other hand i can manouver around my workshop my self.

the 26 in our s13 puts about 30-45kg more over the front axle.

cheers for those numbers, thats what im looking for.

the silvia is a lighter car, but a lot of the weight advantage it has over the skyline is because of the lighter engine.

As i said above the difference between a sr20de s13 and a rb20de r32 is only 100kg. so if your numbers are correct, the chassis weight difference is only 20kg.

by running the sr20de in the r32, the centre of weight is shifted towards the centre of the car which results in better handling.

I would go for a silvia if I could find one in decent condition! there are plenty of manual non turbo r32s around so it seems like a good option.

but hang on a minute. now you are comparing SR20 motor AND gearbox to an RB25 motor and gear box. I would say there is definately a weight difference in the box, and RB25 is heavier than RB20 (granted not by much).

    • Before I commit to it as I already have the wastegate off the car, would you change it to the 9psi spring instead of the 12, or whack it back on now and try your suggestion?   Edit: Actually I might just swap the spring and see what the logs say after another few pulls, as we know it's still spiking without the Mac valve in the picture so I need more data without the Mac valve trying to combat the issue.
    • Sounds good Hmm suppose the main thing is, how much do you care about this car? The filler doesn't make for a very good water barrier lol. If there was a tiny little bit of rust forming now, that in 3 to 5 years time becomes obvious under the paint (starts to bubble up), would it bother you?
    • I already have the ability to datalog the voltage... what I can't do is correlate it to what the gauge is showing when I'm looking at the data at a later date. Or something like this. Except getting the oil to 125C+ involves me going 200+kmh at the track so you can imagine this is a little tricky unless I do something like note what the voltage is when I am at the top of 5th gear so I have a point to reference on. Drove car today. O2 still reading richer because hopefully not a leak instead of massive restriction I've introduced. Car really doesn't sound like a LS. It's quite strange. Pulled a bit of fuel out up top. This does potentially explain why my spark plugs looked like the car was running pretty over-rich. If I was tuning it to a ~12.7 which in reality was far richer than that in the past. It will be handy to have the dyno WB to compare my WB to to compare notes that's for sure. At this point I'm happy to just sit in the passenger seat and tune the thing given I've got about 7 million hours on the platform lol.
    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.
